UPDATE: This bug has been fixed with the new firmware 2.2.1

Looks like a known issue that the 2g touch skips while playing lossless.

I do hope this is a software issue and not a hardware issue. Hoping this can be fixed with an update soon, anyone else experiencing this error? Here is a link to another forum discussing..bummer. I saw people mentioning in another thread, but no dedicated topic to it. I figured that it would be nice to get feedback from other 2G owners on this matter.

Some were, some were not. The skipping happens with all of them though. I tried also to convert existing files to lossless file format which were previously smaller bit rates, and it happens to these files too.

I spent the better part of an hour discussing with the techs at Apple and have logged a case number internally for their purposes, and to help expedite resolve to this error ASAP. Hopefully can be address with software update.

This morning I to play lossless files I loaded onto my friends new 16GB 2G touch, same errors.

Yeah, most iPods struggle with lossless, WAV or ALAC. I'm pretty sure it's how the iPod firmware/software deals with buffering; it's pretty subpar, sadly.

I have used almost every generation of ipod going back to 2006 and listen exclusively to apple lossless and have never had this skipping issue on any of them. I recently purchased a 2Gen Touch, I hope this will not be an issue for me. Both of my 1Gen Touch worked great with apple lossless.

I remember having this issue with 3rd gen iPod and the iPod photo I had iModded which was one reason I stopped using alac and went with 320kb aac. As I remember it happened when single files were bigger than buffer memory and since a lot of my music is classical symphnies with tracks running easily to 15-20 minutes it was a big problem. Never had the problem with 320 kb aac files though. The second reason I stopped using alac was faster battery drain and the third was that I could not reliably detect the difference between alac and 320 kb aac in a portable environment.

Please do give some lossless files a try on your 2G Touch and try some while the screen is on and some while off (putting to sleep by pushing top button). You may be finding yourself wanting the 1G touch around for a bit until this is resolved if a listener to Lossless like I am..

Same here!
I have been using exclusively Apple Lossless on my iPods the last 3-4 years, and only experienced skips on a 24-bit/48KHz album. Regular 16-bit/44.1KHz files have caused no skips at all..

Currently using a 1G iPod nano and Apple Lossless with great success.

Quote from a mac forum user..

Same problem on 2nd generation touch and lossless. To get this fixed call Apple support and insist on speaking with a IPOD "product expert." I did that a week ago and he told me they are well aware of the issue and think they know what causes it. They are working on a solution and promise it will be part of the next IPOD Touch software update. But they could not say when that will be.
As soon as you get through to Apple ask for a product expert. Do not let them waste your time on a restore of your Touch.
The more people who call, the more pressure they will feel to get this fixed.

another on the temp fix..

"I'm pretty certain the issue is software related as the buffer mush be set to be lower when the screen is turn off and not a hardware fault as ALAC does not skip when the screen is on. "Setting - General - Auto-Lock never" It kills the battery but it is a work around until a new firmware is released. I hope the fault get fully resolved soon."

I got my 2nd gen and it indeed does skip with lossless tracks. Quite a bit too. Listening to Dylan's new bootleg album I get a drop out every song. The more I think about this the more it angers me too.

First off- its their own freakin codec, which they have supported for how many years? How do they suddenly not know how to implement it?

Second- its blatant false advertising. You cannot say it supports something when it does not.

Anyway, rant over any more news on a fix?

I'm using aiff files on mine and it's playing them faultlessly, but granted they do take up a lot of space on it.

It does seem very strange that it has problems playing one of its own native formats, definitely sounds like a software issue.

Happens on my new unit too, I have tried two 2G touch's. Both skip lossless files, big bummer.

Is there any more buzz on when Apple plans to fix this? I flew to Cali over the weekend and had to listen to all my music skip. I cannot believe more people are not pissed off about this. I don't just mean here, but in general. It is their codec, and they do not support it (despite claiming in ads they do) on their most popular ipod?

I have spoken to Apple tech support many times. It happens on other file sizes too (Qty 2 Touch 2G units I have owned). Although the skips do not happen as frequently with 320/192 etc as with the lossless, the 2G touch does skip tracks occassionally that are not lossless. I was advised from Apple to keep watching out for a software update available in the future, but was not given any date for resolve.

You would think there would be more people upset by this on HF and posting to this thread. The more people contact Apple and provide feedback the faster this error may be corrected.
