if that mr. music snob was in reference to me, i apologize, didn't mean it in a snobby way. just was saying that he considered disturbed better than "simple" rap ... and that it might not be a valid comparison.

Im not a fain of mainstream rap either but your comment is moronic. If ANYONE can do it, why don't they? Why don't you go out and make a popular rap album and become a millionaire? Think before you speak.

Mr. Music Snob...It is totally uncool to diss someone else's music no matter what it is. My college roommate was a jazz drummer and I was into rock so you can guess the **** I got. What can I say? Coltrane sucks because I don't understand it or I can't relate? Another guy down the hall was a jazz guitarist and he came into my room one day and picked up my Les Paul just to prove his point that rock is simple therefore sucks by playing the entire Hemisphere (Rush) album from memory, and almost perfectly

Well, at least it is MUSIC. I may not like a lot of jazz, but I can appreciate it.
But Rap is NOT music. No one plays any instruments. It's some idiot talking, with a computer making up sounds, or copying off of someone elses musical talent for background. Heck, a lot of Pop is borderline.
It may be an artform, but it is not music.

Wow, this thread is really filled with morons! Lots of rappers play their own instruments. All you are basing your decision on is the mainstream. Dig a little deeper and you will find deeply talented musicians.

I know that there are some rappers who play instruments, or have a band. I don't have any problem with them at all. Some of it that I have heard is actually decent. But don't say LOTS of rappers play instruments, or have a band, because the % of them is very small.
However, my comments WERE directed at the mainstream, which is the type that most folks listen to. And the mainstream stuff is what you hear being played with booming bass, on a $5000 car stereo, in a $500 Pinto.

thanks for being so kind as to define "music" for us.

Varese and Stockhausen might have differing opinions though..

Do you honestly expect someone who says something like "rap isn't music" to know who Varése (I think I got the accent right, someone correct me if that's wrong) or Stockhausen is?

The Roots are a popular hip-hop group that play all their own instruments and I saw a show where the MC's (K-Os) only accompaniment was a guy with a guitar.
As for calling all MCs idiots, that's a horrible generalization which could probably be applied somewhat to many mainstream groups but in the underground scene people's motivations are different (art over money) and some profoundly deep music is the result. As a previous poster said Sage Francis is a poet, his melancholy "Personal Journals" album is brilliant. You also have guys like Aesop Rock who rap all in metaphors... etc, etc. My point is not all these guys are Eminems or Nellys.
Anyway, whether it's mainstream or underground a lot of people hate rap/hip-hop and that's fine... I'd prefer that underground hip-hop stays esoteric.
