Hi,
ph34r.gif

I'm making a "purpose built" audio cable. I'm looking for a kind person to help me test it, through a sound recording I made with it. The helper would need to;

- download a 60 meg rar file from rapidshare

- open the rar file and listen (with headphones) to two flac recordings made of the same piece of classical music

- Give a brief overview; i.e. SQ comparison between the two recordings.

One recording was made with an over the counter cable, the other with my cable. I want it to be a blind test, so I'll tell you which recording is which after your mini report. It shouldn't take too long, perhaps around 1 hour all up.

cheers stephen
ps its not for commercial purposes.

I'm game. It will have to be next weekend, however, so maybe someone else is a better choice.

I would unpack the rar, move the two FLAC files to my Cowon i7, play them thru a high quality (Sliver Dragon) mini2mini with the Cowon vol all the way up thru a Predator, already broken in.

Since this is classical music, I would listen with Senn 600's and Grado GS1000's. I would keep the gain setting of the Predator the same between the two files, but would otherwise adjust to match levels.

I would then repeat this using a mini2rca (not the world's best, Gold Radio Shack) into my new Head-Direct EF-1 SS/tube hybrid amp (with a just broken in NOS RCA clear-top side-getter 12AU7), since the Predator is not the best match for the Grados (I have just been trying this out due to some posts in another thread).

I am nearing 60 so my high freq hearing is not that of a younger man. I am however good with transient repsonse, bass, detail, etc.

I can get another audiophile at the office to repeat the test using the Predator. He is a classical music fan, but will be away for two weeks so this second result will be delayed. Don't tell me the results until after this second test! Same high freq issue as me, unfortunately. We do have young-un's at the office, and I have hooked them all on good headphones, but they don't/won't listen to classical!

Hi -,
thanks for your quick response. Next weekend is fine!!!

I'll post the download-file link on this thread for you next weekend, with instructions. It should be an interesting experience for both parties.

I am really grateful, thanks again .................Stephen.

Yes, this has been a very fun project. I see there is a whole different forum here just for cables, but I'm not ready to venture there. wavoman, am in the process of sending you a detailed PM.

To any slightly interested party reading this; I will hopefully post a minature summary from wavoman here if he permits later. Details have been kept to an absolute minimum for a good reason (blind test).

Hey thats a kind offer,

cheers.

After the weekend, this blind test will be over. Details will "spring-forth".

Someone correct me if I am wrong. If it is an analog signal cable, wouldn't this be dependent on quality of the analog to digital converter that you use for the recording? I mean even if no one would be able to tell the difference, there will be people who would say that the ADC used isn't good enough to detect the nuance?
