New hard drive, advice?

The seagate deal is gone, the drive is no longer for sale, and the WD thing didn't work for me, though seems to have worked for others. I don't see how one would get a $35 discount from the $130 price tag when WD in the upgrade things says

"†Please note: The price quoted above are for out-of-warranty products. In-warranty products have a discount of $3 per product from the price quoted above. "

so old drives don't get any discount which explains mine not getting anything off, and new drives get their warranty voided and only save $3 so you would need quite a few codes to get down around $100.

Some advice from previous ecperience...

Buy from a local store rather than order..the 20-30 dollars wont make much of a difference in the long run. especially with a sensitive device such as a HD.

I disagree. problems in the long run- three to five years- won't be dealt with by your local stores. you will be dealing with the manufacturer's warranty directly. go for cheap sales, but hold out for reputable lines. many decent online shops will also exchange defective hardware for you within the purchase period, and at most they will make you pay for shipping. savings should still hold up.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I went to Best Buy and got the 500gb for 90, I didn't really feel like waiting and at the moment i have excess cash, so that coupled with the doa reports made me go to a brick and mortar. It is a great drive by the way, very quiet.

I think it's worthy of note that you'll find horror stories about every hard drive manufacturer. I've had some pretty good luck with Western Diigtal. I haven't been so lucky with Samsung and Seagate, however.
