Shure SE210 and cancer?

Hi everyone,
I just purchased a pair of Shure SE210 earphones as a replacement to my lost SE110. I'm very happy with them, but after reading the small print on the back of the box I am in a bit of a dismay. It says something along the lines of (sorry don't have the box with my right now):

"A material in this product is known in the state of california to cause cancer and lead to birth defects."

I have tried to search to see if I can find anything about this, but I've reached nowhere. Anyone know anything about this?

And I am now wondering if the SE110's box had this written with small print on it (anyone know?).

I'm guessing a part of the plastic used in the earphone is likely to be carcinogenic if inhaled. I don't think it should be too big a problem - this kind of material is probably used in more products than the Shure earphones.

If you even bought a SE530, you will get a notice that tell you there is lead presented inside the earphone exceeding some standard some where, which is probably the same in your case. Don't worry, those chemical are only to be found inside the earpiece and will have not chance of reaching you in normal use, unless you decided it is a good idea to break the earpiece open and swallow what ever is inside.

There are a lot of small thing we don't talk about in life, like those radio active material in your smoke detector, or small trace of mercury in all the seafood, preservative in can food that labeled as emulsifier, etc. I can't tell you it won't have any effect on you in real life, but there is no way to run away unless you want to go back to the 16 century.

The point is, the state of California seems to have look at the issue and make sure no harm will come to you, or at least they tried.

This has to be the lead in the solder. Unless you open the phones apart and eat a pair for breakfast every day, it's really, really unlikely that they will give you any cancer. You may still get a cancer if you lesten to them while you smoke though…

You`ve not lived if you haven`t stuck your iems up your nose lol
I work with carcinogenic chemicals everyday soo this is just scare mongering and if it really is the case then they should not be on the market imo.

Did you know that the cereals in your kids breakfast also cause cancer if eaten daily.
Twas on the news some time ago sir.

If that is really all the warning says, that is really irresponsible. If you are going to scare people, at least scare them with some actual information so that they have the opportunity to assess the risk. Also, if the State of California is concerned enough that they require a warning label, why are they allowing the product to be sold in their state?

No wonder California is short of cash, people are scared to buy anything.

It's better than ignoring the presence of carcinogens. The label can DEFINITELY use alot of clarifying, though if you allow vague nothings to scare you, there are larger problems to deal with.

The Head-fi crowd is clearly a group of people who know how to do their own research. I wouldn't put it above us to not poison ourselves.

that means it only happens inside california? lol ur out of luck if u live in CA.. everywhere else on Earth is fine

Lets not jump on Shure. Unfortunately, companies have to go to incredible lengths to avoid ridiculous lawsuits based on ridiculous claims and associations these days.

If they included this mystery carcinogen in the product, and Joe Blow gets cancer, and lawer finds out he wore Shure phones... You might see a 5000000 bagillion dollar lawsuit. And some liberal fruit of a judge might grant it.
