This doesn't refer to any one amp in particular, but I'm wondering this: I'm using Denon D5000 headphones with an iPod classic (lossless only). When plugging this into an amp via the headphone socket, am I best having it output at maximum volume or lower?

I'm sure it doesn't actually matter what headphone model or music device I'm using, but I've included it just in case.

When I was using my ipod/amp from the headphone out before I received my LOD I would set the ipod volume to no more than halfway. I would let my amp control most of the volume and it seemed to sound much cleaner that way for me at least.

I suppose that's a result of poor amplification inside the source. It figures that if no matter how good an amp is, if it's amplifying a distorted signal you're only going to get well-defined distortion.
