I just wanted give some feedback to whomever gave me the idea for actually doing this mod. It is the phat pad mod and I have to say that not only did the W1000's improve drastically comfort wise, but the W1000's also improved in sound performance. Granted the sound improvements are small, but small enough for me to notice them, and that in my book is great! Instead of shoving a rubber tubing under the pads, I chose to use the foam covers for the drivers used on my brothers Senn HD500. All I did was cut a little bigger than a 1/4 thick curved slices, and placed them under the pads throughout the entire circumference of each side of the headphone. I think that using foam would be better for a more bright type of headphone such as the W1000's. It has tamed and smoothed the highs and also tightened the bass overall response, including the lower mids to upper bass regions. This is the case because I believe that foam is better for the absorption of the sound waves which tend to calm and control everything whereas a more reflective material such as rubber or plastic would reflect the sound more causing it to extend and exaggerate the highs and lows with also an echo-like sound.

As for the comfort, the pads are now completely circum aural and cover over my entire ear. So now my ears go up inside the foam pads instead of having the pads slightly rest on the tip tops of my ears...which to be honest wasn't all that bad, but this is simply a better way to go. Please note that my ears are quite small and having this mod done to other people with big heads and big ears might not come out with the same results. Plus, the pads are now more fluffy and cushy which again I'll take anyday over what was there before...it was just less cushy.

Another mod that I'm sure other people have tried out is taking a couple of rubber bands and placing them at the base of where the wires meet the cups on either side. This again is for people with smaller heads like mine and allows for a much tighter fit. This also brings pushes my ears up closer inside the now larger cavity(due to the foam placement which increases the size of the space btwn the drivers and the inside of the pads) of where the drivers are. This all allows for a better environment for the sound before it reaches my ears...and in turn, the cans sound a lot better. It's kind of hard for a novice like me to explain, but I hope I painted a good picture for you all. If anyone has any questions about my weirdo explanations, don't hesitate to ask.

Any little shortcomings that I had previously noticed about these cans when I bought them are now gone. The two were basically the sometimes bright presentation, and the loose fit, which again didn't cause any discomfort, they were just kind of loose like my MDR F1's are.

Good job! I am glad somebody got brave enough to try that mod. I have tried both foam and tubing, and both make obvious (and distinct) differences in the sound. The AD10s especially went from unbearable to downright pleasant. That doesn't mean that they are off the modification list!

So is a cable mod next?

Unfortunately, I don't have a digital camera, but take a look at some of gerG pics of his W100 phat pads...my pads basically look the same as his does in the picture.
Here is the link to gerG's pics of his phat pads. Notice how they look very full and well, perfect. That's what happens when you complete this mod. It is worth it!

Hi Gainex!

I agree, the wooden plug was a beauty. Unfortunately they loaded it up with potting compound (epoxy) and re-using it is a tough job. I may rework it some day, but it really isn't as high quality as aftermarket connectors. I may be able to use the wooden cover on something else, though.

Purk, oh come on now! How many pairs of blue headphones do you know of?

I may have to let them go, though. I will soon be up to 5 pairs of AT cans, and that is about 2 too many.
