Hi Everyone,

I'm not a regular poster so apologies if this has been discussed somewhere else.

I've been using SE530's for a year or so, and have had to send 2 pairs back with split cables (seemed to split just close to the bud itself each time). Customer service in the UK is very good though, and they have sorted them out each without a quibble. In fact I now three sets of accessories...

Anyway, they just sent me a new pair (its great to have them back), and it seems that they have changed all of the cabling. The extension cables are now iPhone friendly (yay!) and the attached cables are now much thinner and more flexible.

What's the deal? Have they fixed the problems? Are there any issues with this batch?

Cheers

I'm a newbie too who recently purchased the se530. Do you have any pics of your se530 with the "new" cables? I'm curious to see if I have the new cables or the old one

Well the main difference is that actual unit cable is thinner than it used to be, and is made from a different, softer plastic, which is hopefully more durable.

The other key difference (from before) is that the headphone cables are now much much thinner than the extensions cables. I don't think that used to be the case.

I have attached some pictures which will demonstrate more or less nothing. I am limited to an iPhone camera (at work) which is useless really.

I'd say the way to check is to look at the connectors on the extension cables. If they look like they'll fit an iPhone, you probably have the new ones.

I'm interested in this discussion and am looking at my SE530s now for comparison. Whatever it means, I have the same pair you do (they are also new), my wires are much thinner than the extensions. I haven't seen an "older" pair, so I don't know if this is how it always was. Does anyone know?

I had older pair and now have newer pair. Never had any problems with either. The wires/cables that lead up to the earphones (after the split) have always been about 1/2 the thickness of the main cable.

All cables are date coded. The Shure website or Shure customer service or even someone here could help describe how to decipher the date code to help you understand when yours were made. I don't know the exact date but I believe around Feb '08 the new cables started appearing on the SE530.

My package says 2008/06/24, so I definitely think I have the new ones. The real question is are they actually better? Since you haven't had problems with either your old or new pair, I can't assess durability, but are they supposed to be more durable? What about microphonics?

There was something with certain people's oil in the skin/sweat that was deteriorating the old material. If you were not one of those people I can't think you would ever know the difference between the two cable types. Just my opinion.
