Shure E2c vs. Etymotic ER6
May 26, 2003 at 10:08 PM Post #2 of 24
When I got my Ipod last year I already was using ER-6. I didnt like them with the Ipod. Did not have enough bass, Highs too screechy for me.

I sold them and upgraded to ER4p. WOW!!! No comparison to the er-6. But for some of my older music not enough range, lacking bass....Also have to pretty much stay stationery. Cant excersice or even really walk for that matter with the 4p. However if it was a new recording of any type of music you cant come close to the 4p.

They are for sale now on ebay #3026737755

ot the Shure e2's the other day. They are a perfect match for the Ipod and what I use them for:

Good sound: better bass and mids than the er-6, but not as detailed, but the highs are good and not screechy in your ears.

Great isloation ( almost as good as the 4p's)

Low profile, dont stick out of your ears. Easy to insert. Easy to get a seal.

No microphonics: Have walked and exercised no problems.

For only listening to mp3's on the Ipod and for the price it has been the best combination of goods vs. bads so far for me.

Other phones include mx500, and ksc-35's: The Shure e2's are better than both of these.

these are my opinions only im SHURE others will vary.

I haven't heard the E2C's but I own the Etys Er-6, which I use with a Sharp DR7 minidisc player. I don't use a portable amp.

WIthout any amp and without any EQ adjustments, the ER-6 sounds okay and maybe a tiny bit weak. The highs are nice but the bass isn't very full. Once I turn on the bass boost (level 1/3 or 2/3, the Er-6 becomes a phenomenal headphone - the highs are still there and the bass fills out.

I don't have the Ipod, but know that its supposed have a more powerful amp than the DR-7, so that might be good for the Er-6. but I think to enjoy the ER-6 you need to be able to do a bit of bass-boosting on your player.

Walking around is oay with the ER-6. I have had no problem with cord microphonics. But with the foam tips I can hear a tiny bit of thunp from my feet - not enough to be a problem walking, but it makes jogging an imposibility. Great isolation with the foam tips and very comfortable - far more so than the plastic tips which to me are just useless.

BTW the ER-6 is $129 new, but if you look for them used (here on this board) you can usually get them fro $90-100. They are also findable on e-bay, but ebay bidders are not very savvy so they generally go for more like $110-120 used on E-bay.

I'm very curious to hear more from those who have both the ER-6 and the IPOD because I love the ER-6 (I'm only gonna use canal phones from here on) and I'm thinking about getting an IPOD.

I've tried both Er-4P and E5 on my Zen and found E5 to be much much better than Er-4P. I never get that 3D surrounding sound which all kinds of musical noises spin around your head like a whirlpool. I found E5 to be quite astounding especially with jazz and techno/trance. Only a downside I found was that it wasn't the most comfortable earphone, well, at least for me. It's damn expensive but if want the ultimate experience..I'd recommend E5.

Well for that ungodly amount of money, one should expect them to be other-worldly - maybe even better than sex!

I myself still can't even find a way to justify spending $100 on earphones...

How punny.... ahem... Do you have to wet them and clean wax off them each time you use them? I am thinking of these, but spiting on them, and earwax on the clear surface looks gross in public.

Err.. Are you refering to the clear inserts? Hmm.. i have no idea. I don't use them. I've tried them.
I dunno, i didn't find have ear wax on them when i used them...
...
HOWEVER, the foamies do get dirty after use.. i don't wet them before putting them in.. they recommend that you squeeze the foam and the stretch your ear lob (to straighten the ear canal). But ive just gotten it to the point where i just shove it in with one hand.. With one finger i pull the ear lob.. and then i push the earphone in.. im not quite sure how to describe it.. but it gets easier each time you do it.

...

Anyone see if other tips from Etymotic or other Shure models would fit on the Shure E2C. I would really like to try out a flange tip on the E2C.

Do you mean a triple flange tip? The flex sleeves (that are included with E2) are a single flange.

All of the Etymotic tips taper down to a thin diameter. This will severely alter the frequency response of the E2.
