How to determine if Sennhieser CX500 is a fake
Aug 5, 2008 at 3:26 AM Post #46 of 60
yea in Australia the cx500 retail anywhere from $101 to $149 in the shops, that's why i was looking at the sony mdr EX85, those around $65 and the EX90LP around $100.

my last pair was a fake SONY EX90LP, the bass was very strong (more bass than the genuine one) but it sounded very boomy, mid-range sounded muddy and "dirty". so now i only look for genuine ones, fingers crossed.

Hi everyone. I bought some cx500's the other day, and they are due to arrive on Monday. I was completely oblivious to all the fake Sennhiesers around, so I jumped at the chance to buy them for £15, only to realise after that there are fakes going around!

I've been using some ordinary £5/10USD in ear headphones for the last few months, so my question is, if the cx 500's that i bought turn out to be fake(which im sure they will), will they still produce a decent output, in comparison to the reallly cheap in ear headphones?

Thanks

Nope. Unfortunately they will sound horrendous, just like my fake CX300s. I love to tell you they could be salvageable but I'd be lying.

There is one way, I just thought of, that I can salvage mine you yours, use them as a radio talk show listener. They might be okay for discerning what is being said.

Ah damn! Im not picky when it comes to headphones, as long as they stay in place, have some bass, and dont sound distorted. I knew i should have just stuck to some cheap jvc ones i saw for £10 in the department store!

Oh well, at least the seller offers a 7day refund, and i used paypal so i can claim my money back!

don't jump to conclusion so quick, there ARE some good quality genuine cx500s on ebay, i got mine fairly cheap. you just need to look thru them carefully as there are a lot of fakes.

my cx500 sounds great, good soundstage, good clarity, good highs and lows and tight bass, i'm very happy with it.

however there are some things that still bothers me and i'm still wondering myself whether mine is 100% genuine.
1. the volumn control is upside down, i.e. max= mute, min = loudest, doesn't bother me of course but it just makes me wonder.
2. on the earphone the Sennheisers logo is not properly contered.

other than those, it looks genuine, i.e. genuine package, great sound quality etc.

the cx500s are designed in Germany, but made and manufactured in china, maybe i have a "bad" pair?? bad quality control?? any comments?

Try to get support for them. Tell the CS there's some issues with your phones and see if they will RMA them. If they do, you'll get a genuine set back with zero doubts about the authenticity.

sounds good, i haven't left a feedback yet hehe, but damn i'm happy with the sound, it runs circle around my Sony MRD EX90LP and my Panasonic RP. I turn on the SRS-WOW stereo mode on my Mp4 its insane

Last week I received a genuine set of white CX500s from Buy.com (not their marketplace) for ~53$ shipped. I saw some slightly better prices online but I wasn't sure if I could trust the other resellers so this it what I settled on. I took quite a few pictures before opening the package because I was so paranoid after seeing all these threads. If it would be helpful having pictures of the white variety vs. the black/titanium packages I can upload them.

More pics of the real deal is always helpful! That would be great if you could do that.

hey im back, i just wanna keep this page updated since i recently got a new pair of CX500 and here are some strange things i noticed.

1. the new pair's sound is VERY different to the my last pair (i got both of them from Ebay), the bass is much more prominent (VERY powerful but still sounded tight, as in "doop doop doop" instead of "dooom dooom dooom"), the overall soundstage is not as open as my last pair, the midrange and highs on this new pair sounded "warmer" and slightly "muddy". my last pair sounded very open and more "clear", the highs and mids on my last pair were cleaner than this one, just less bass. (so i'm guessing this new pair is a fake)

2. now here's the strange thing, from outside this new pair looks 100% genuine, it could have fooled ANYONE. it has near perfect packaging (definitely BETTER than my last pair), even the headphone itself looks 100% genuine, the volume control is tighter, letterings are smaller, the ONLY thing that's not guinue is the leather pouch, the letterings are taller and thinner than the genuine, and the L/R letters are less bright. But still at first look most people would say my new pair is genuine and my lat pair was a fake, the only difference is the sound. but in fact its the other way around...at least that's what i think.

so my conclusion is this... it is now almost IMPOSSIBLE to tell whether you have a fake or genuine pair until you try it on, even then there are the HIGH QUALITY fakes that provide excellent sound quality and good packing.

most methods of identifying fakes on the net these days are outdated as fake manufacturers have perfected their technology. Only trial and error could tell, It's safe to say that I can now identify a fake from genuine every single time.

Thanks ohyeadude for your post! Can't believe you haven't posted in a year.

Back on topic, that's really disappointing that the fakes have gotten so good that they're almost indistinguishable from the real thing. Really the only step anybody can take to avoid counterfeits is to purchase from authorized vendors. eBay and Amazon Marketplace buyers beware.

Hello guys! I was thinking of buying a pair of CX 300-II from a Sennheiser shop but I found a pair of CX 500 on a site which is something like ebay. They cost about 33$ and the seller claims that that these are genuine CX 500s and that they are considered Class B products (or some sort of refurbished) by Sennheiser because there some things which are not on the right place in the box : the cable isn't fitted on the right spot and things like this.

Honnestly, I tend to say that these are genuine. I think the Senn logo is right where it has to be and it doesn't seem to be bigger. I can't really tell if the >PET< logo is ok because the picture is blurry. Here is the link : Casti Sennheiser CX 500,originale,sigilate - Okazii (32023026) .

I want to hear your opinion too. Thanks !

LE : The user has a good reputation and there are other people which recommend the CX 500s which he's selling.

Hi Guys,
I'm new here but I just can't help but to comment on all of the complaining about these things. For $15-$30 what do people expect! I dare to say they will, in all likelyhood, be fake but still sound better than what came stock with your player.

I do have genuine SENN CX300s, MM50 iPs, CX500s, and PX100s all purchased at retail.

I recently could not help myself while browsing on ebay and looking at my terrible sounding iPhone buds (but I do miss the full functioning remote and mic especially while cycling and running)!! I purchased a set of MM50 iPs and 2 sets of white CX500s all for $46 including shipping. I was not expecting much but I was happily supprised. After a 40 hour break in these sound and look as good as the real deal. I almost hated to rip these CX500s apart but for $15 I have to put these buds on my iPhone cables. The final result.....a great sounding and looking pair of iPhine in ear buds. NO COMPLAINTS HERE.
Sorry for the long post.

What do you guys think?

Hi folks,

Could this be fake?
http://cgi.ebay.es/Sennheiser-CX500-Headphones-for-MP3-Ipad-Iphone-NEW-UK-/320671709691?pt=UK_AudioVisualElectronics_HomeAudioHiFi_Headphones&hash=item4aa985f9fb

I think Sennheiser CX500 are outdated so this price can be right. The seller is from UK and he is a power seller.

What do you think?
