Record shops and suddenly blankness

A list in the wallets sound like a good idea. This blankness also occurs with me. One minute I know what I want the next... zip.

"...goes into the record Shop..."

Record Shop? I remember those: friendly, knowledgeable staff earning your repeat business. The place where, "I don't like it" was a valid (and accepted) reason to return opened, listened to, and not-defective discs.

Ah...fond memories of those wonderful, but not-very-efficient/profitable, places. I thought they were all but extinct. If you have one close by, you're lucky.

Actually we don't do too badly for record shops. York is quite a small place (population 100,000) and we have:

A privately owned general record shop that does imports and even has a speciality jazz section.

A proper music shop that sells sheet music and pianoes etc that has a very good classical music CD department.

A second hand classical music CD shop thats really good (they even take out big adverts in Gramaphone).

Two second hand vinyl shops.

Also the usuall suspects, Borders, HMV and Virgin.

Not too bad for a small town.

I like best buy for music. Good deals in there on stuff that's not too obscure. Once in a while they'll have some random stuff that I'd never expect them to have too. I love the blankness. Wandering is fun. I keep a list though. I just always forget to take it with me.

That would be Track Records, Right?

I love to go music shopping in York on a regular basis. At least 2-3 times a year.

The only place better that i've been to is Leeds. Both cities are within driving distance and an hours ride away

Nice to have you aboard Pcolbeck. There's not too many brits on here, but were increasing slowly.

All the best, Mick in Hull

blanking out what i want when faced with 10,000 choices in a record has happened to me a few times. so i often write down what i want.

strangely, when i shop for used cd's i always seem to zero right in to exactly what i want.

i've have had very bad luck shopping online. almost every vinyl record i have bought online new (cdnow, etc) has arrive warped, or with the jacket's corners dented. i've also recieved dvd's from online (amazon.com) with cutting knife scratches and other blemishes on the cover (for example, the non-replaceable carboard box for the bab 5 season 1 had knife scratches across the faces. i bought season 2 in person at suncoast as a result). i know i should have complained, returned them, etc., but after paying for return shipping and the hassle it just was not worth it. some places will not even take back vinyl once it is opened.

[size=small]Funny, it happens to me as well, but I get the same thing looking up CDs online (unless it's Amazon, which they keep track of the ones I've looked at). I know I need to make a monster list for the next time I go out to buy some CDs.

Also, personally I think Best Buy is the best place to buy CDs after any place that sells good, *used* CDs. They have the most reasonable prices, they don't require censored albums, plus there's a lot there if you're done looking for music. The selection isn't always in, but you get lucky more often than not.

Local record stores are okay, but they're not so good when they play really awful background music and the clerks are ripoffs of the Comic Book Store Guy from The Simpsons (non-humorous ones at that).

i make friends with the clerks at the various local record/dvd stores in my neighborhood. this way i sometimes get free cd's, extra stamps for a free cd or dvd, special treatment (like going out of their way to find a missing booklet for a used dvd), and recommendations for any really good new music or movies that just came in. or just a good chat about games/music/movies. yeah, some are right out of "clerks", but you get a lot more if you connect.

As soon as I figure out how to attach one, I was going to look for Master Shake (Shake-sula, the microphone rula!)

"Why don't you just marry the vortex if you love it so much?"
"Your gonna break your ass that you don't even have!"
"Why would anybody spawn you? I mean... you know what I'm sayin?"

The one and only. I've been a big fan some years now. The more is listen the more I marvel at the guy.

Personally I just love the first Flying Buritto Brothers album - The Gilded Palace Of Sin. That right there is the epitomy of the music GP envisaged in his American Cosmic Music ideals. Of course, I like all of his stuff.

I'm really into the late '60s / early 70s country rock stuff. Dillards, Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Mike Nesmith and all the others. Really floats my boat so to say

I noticed that for me, this happened all the time and was a symptom of not buying enough. See, if you buy enough music, you keep your "To Get" list very short, thus making it easier to remember when you only have 1 or 2 albums you're still looking for.

Unfortunately, the 'blankness' has now been transfered to my wallet.

I now buy almost exclusively from used-CD stores; a shopping list is next-to-useless to me because most of the time I can't find what I look for anyway. I just scan the shelf for things that look interesting.

On-line used stores, like djangos.com, allow you to check for specific item, but of course most of the time the things you want are not in stock...

Happens to me everytime. If I am alone and browsing I never end up buying anything. If I am browsing with friends I always come out with a bunch of CD's. I think it is power of suggestion from peer groups kind of like the net. I buy a lot from Amazon because all those positive reviews push me one step closer to a purchase. Peer to peer marketing is a dangerous thing indeed!

I've just started making a list by placing links on my webpage using my Amazon Associates account, that way I have a list, and anyone who wants to buy me one, can. (And I earn commission

).

Remember to use jude's link to buy from amazon!
