Do you think wearing full-size headphones in public makes you look like a spaz/geek/weirdo?

Besides, IEMs are so much better suited to out of doors listening than headphones it is silly to use headphones.

Apparently you would have a hard time imagining that a person is not going to limit themselves, who they want to be and how they want to live, for the sake of adhering to what other people think is or is not right.

That's a personal problem - it would be nice of you (to others) to not insist that this has to matter

And nice of you (to you) to consider whether it does or does not.

As for the remark on IEMs, you're definitely not on solid ground where sound quality is concerned. For other areas, yes - they are going to win out in size etc. However, that is a really, really obvious thing to point out

And, indeed - if nothing else, your conclusions will meet "In your opinion." And that is correct. You're not going to have much luck with claims that don't even involve consideration for differing values and personal preferences

I like wearing my good cans and dislike wearing IEMs.

I thought everything said on head-fi was in the author's opinion

There is nothing wrong with not wearing full size headphones out for their appearance - just like there is nothing wrong with wearing them out because of their appearance.

I will still scoff on the inside at persons using headphones with poor isolation in noisy areas, though.

Most people preoccupied with not doing what they think others want them to do are even more worried about the opinions of others than normal. Which is why I objected to your flat rejection of aesthetics.

Do aesthetic qualities affect sound? No.
Does that make them unimportant? No.

And if all you care about is what other people think, you'll end-up a tool blindly following others. It goes both ways. I do care about others think but random strangers are way down in the list.

Of course, I never advocated any such thing.

We are social creatures, and wouldn't be belaboring the issue in a web forum if we didn't have some degree of care about the impressions of others. Total lack of regard for the impressions of strangers is not enlightenment. (Which is also not what you were arguing for).

It is perfectly natural for this to play a part in the selection of headphones for outdoor use, whether or not an individual weights it above, equal, or below matters like sound quality, portability, and isolation.

Context is everything.

Would I wear full-size headphones in Colorado (shout out to Luminette!)? No... because I'm either driving (unsafe) or fishing (also unsafe - but only for the headphones lest I fall in...).

Would I wear full-size headphones in New York?
Yes and gladly. This damn city is a stinkhole that sounds bad too.

Also, I don't mind talking to people in Colorado but somehow, I find people in New York a bit more rude... so I help fulfill that prophesy by not talking to them.

Note: As I go to school in New York now, this is not meant to be insulting to anyone in New York. I'm not trying to be closed-minded, only cynical. :p

besides... how else can i recognize other headfiers if you are all wearing little things I can't see?

You are quite welcome to leave this stinkhole at your earliest convenience.

In your little mind, perhaps.

So, in your world, I'm supposed to absorb an ad hominem attack on myself, and on 8 million of my fellow New Yorkers, and not respond?

Oh, and by the way, have you ever been to NYC?

Great! Go high five your imaginary friends. And whatever you do, stay out of my "stinkhole." I know that's a lot to ask, but do your feeble best.

And you still haven't answered my question, fool. Ever been to NYC?

woah...

I didn't mean to incite anything. I'm sorry if I somehow offended you by referring to New York as a "stinkhole" in a joking manner... (note: the ad hominem attack was also on me since i am clearly contributing to what i see as a negative element... hence, the irony...whatever...)

Anyway, I definitely do not belong in the city - but I shouldn't have referred to what some people call the greatest city on earth as a stinkhole.

my apologies again.

... and back to the idea that headphones don't make you look weird...

I apreciate that. My response was also over the top; I apologize as well.
