Another head-fier recommended I try the Shure E2's for $70 for a solution to my gym phones. Almost everything I've read about the really trashed them to a degree, but I trusted my recommendation and said "Why not"?

Folks these phones are pretty damned good, for me anyway. The midrange is great, as is the low end isn't muddy as all (strong, but not muddy). Unamped I do notice a bit of recessed highs, but pair them with an amp and the highs are pretty much re-established (at least to a greater degree), while adding a touch of airyness. There's also an added depth and articulation to the music if you use an amp as well.

Another HUGE plus for me is the fit of these. My head doesn't feel "full" with these on, and I can wear them for hours. They don't go in nearly as far as the Ety's, and I wonder if it was possible if earlier people were jamming these in too far.

Again these are right for "me". To each his own, but I just though I'd point it out that these could be good phones for you, depending, of course, on you.

HI BILL: On your recommendations I just ordered the E-2. I like the idea that they don't go in the ear very far and I don't see any filters that I have to worry about. Thanks for the heads up.

I just received my Shure E2Cs yesterday, and I have to say I'm quite impressed. The fit is great, no problem with microphonics with the cable. I used them on 2 airline flights, and they block out most of the noise (not so much that you can't hear the obnoxiously loud overhead announcements) and I didn't have to turn the volume up more than one click higher than when I used them in my quiet office. For the price, I don't think that I could have done better. Now waiting for my iPod, and then an amp will have to be in the cards.

Hey LTUCCI1924, there are actually some filters provided (6 or so sets) with the E2c's. They are very easy to install (if you should want to use them) and have worked very well for me. I am still on my original set and they don't show any signs of needing replacement.

Love my E2C's also.

HI: BILL How would you compair the E2c to the koss portapro and 35s and the eggo D66. Is the bass as good as the portapro and 35s and is the e2c as clear as the eggos? What about sound stage?

I know that I wasn't too crazy about the E2's, especially compared to the E1's. But the price difference is about $40-60 depending on where you find each of these earphones. I always felt that the midrange and bass were great, but that the high end seemed extremely rolled off. I have been debating whether or not to plunk down $120-130 on a pair of E1's again, for use with my iBook and now I'm wondering if the E2's might be a good cheaper alternative to the E1's, considering I can tweak the EQ in iTunes to make up for the lack of high end in these cans.

I just got the shure E2c and all I can say is WOW. Right out of the box. I can hear my self breathing and walking with no music on. Just put them in no special fit. I hear great bass, mids and highs. I don't know where people say there is no high end unless I got a special pair. I used the meta42 and the super mini V5.18 with them out of my N707 minidisc. I also used my portable radio with no amp. These are real confortable and don't go in to far and just disappear. Great buy. Thanks BILL.
PS
Now these are super portable with a nice case.

Compared to the portapro's, To me the E2's give a more defined sound, and better ariculation (not by miles mind you, but definitely better to me). Compared to the KSC35's, I find the bass of the 35's to be more boomy and a touch slopier (as I do with the portapro's. The 35's handle the high's a touch better than the E2's, but for me the seemingless transition from the highs to the mids to the bottom level more than make up for that on the Shures.
And again for me, the E2's comfort is really outstanding (better for me than the PP's or the 35's). I wore them for five hours straight on Monday and felt as close to not having canal phones in my ears as I ever did. And the isolation is pretty damn good. They passed the NYC subway test yesterday. I don't hear my footstep or breathing like Lou does, but Idon't hear much outside noise as well.

Makes me wonder about the potential of the E5's.

For clarity.. i cant do a side by side comparison right now (as my friend has eggos and ... well you get the picture).. But clairty wise.. i think they are on par with each other.. nothing particularly sticks outs. However, bass / low end wise.. the e2s win.. hands down.. The eggos sound 'weak" and "empty" compared to the e2s.
...
On a side note, the d66s DO have a better sound stage. MUCH better!
...
does anyone else find that the silicon (clear) ear pieces aren't as comfortable as the foam ones? Hmmm, i think im going to make a pair of foamies myself.. hmmm

...
derek
