The D-EJ01 has a somewhat "analytical" sound, therefore earbud like Senn MX500 and early Sony earbuds or Aiway, and Senn HD580/600 are more suited for this player. My D777 certainly sounds much richer and wider, with perhaps some "veil" in detail. D777 has somewhat delicate built quality though.
I believe it is the matching of your equipment that decides the outcome, just like matching different main desktop rig and various speakers to produce the desired results, based on different sort of music you play, and sometime on different vintage.
But D-EJ01 has a strong feel to it. Because it is slot in, so there is no moving parts around and the whole thing feels just very solid and confident. Given a good headphone amp, I believe you will discover its virtue. It is the last of the great Sonys
