HeadFone New-B,

you still have a chance to go or else - your wallet will be sorry.

after you try out the other headphones and amps and sources and cables being recommended by these guys- you wont look back .
youll try to upgrde and upgrade until either you got all high end equipment / or when your wallet dries up- whichever comes first.

The reason you can find no obvious faults with the v700, is because you most likely have not heard any decent headphones (note - this isn't your fault, good headphones are somewhat rare in the market, very little of quality can be purchased through popular channels).

Oh no no no.... You've got me hooked already fellas... I am going nowhere. Since I already have these though and they're relatively new (2 weeks or so) I will stay with them and in the meanwhile do as much research on here as possible.

Just FYI, it really is too late, seeing as I can already easily envision myself spending about $800 on some headphones and an amp just by the little research that I've done in the past couple of hours.

It's all good, as long as I'm happy with the sound that I get.

Well, I guess that about does it for this thread. My question is basically answered, except for the whole Impedance/Ohm stuff that I would SURELY like explained well, if possible.

Like what would match (for output impedance) a set of headphones (like mine
smily_headphones1.gif
) with a 24 Ohm Impedance?? How do you figure out total power and all that?? I know very little about the whole mess and what little I do know is from the car audio I installed, but all that is on the 4 and 8 Ohm range. Never dealt with the 24, 32, 80 and 120 Ohm stuff that I'm reading about.

Anybody?

P.S. I am NO STRANGER to spending excessive amounts of money on things that normal people wouldn't even fathom. How's a $72 (small) can of car wax (Pinnacle Souveran) sound? How bout $283 for a pair of Oakley (X-Metal) sunglasses?? It's in my blood.... Not necessarily a good thing

Hahaha, I didn't want to scare you with V700 flames or "you must spend at least $500!" suggestions either. Welcome to head-fi, New-B, you have plenty of company

Lots of un-costly options will be a better solution than your v700's - but.. if you're willing to shell out the cash, there is certainly no shortage of ways to spend money around here.

Yep, he's gonna fit right in here quite nicely. Pretty soon he and Joelongwood will be swapping PMs and stories about their equipment he's collected.

I tried to keep away from mentioning his headphone selection, I figured we could spare the guy the devastation coming to his wallet by sticking with answering his cheap amp question.

That's it exactly...and a good thing to know coming into this forum...only problem here is we keep getting happier and happier as our wallets get slimmer and slimmer

Looks like the slow downward spiral is about to become a full blown F5

Well in a half hour I am off to the Chicago meet with a wad of cash. Most interested in Ray Samuels amp and the SuperAudio amp that Hirsch has bee raving about. Then there are new cables for the HD-600. I learned a good trick. I never put my cash in my wallet, that way it never feels thinner after a purchase.
Welcome to Head-Fi New-b.

I am a newbie too or at least I was.... Hmmph!
I listened to these guys and read all their posts. I got so excited I spent $900 on my first headphone-preamp gig. Now, I am in the doghouse and my wife is threatening to call her lawyer.
Be careful.... Be very careful...

Haha... Thanks for all the welcomes and whatnot fellas. I appreciate it.

But what's the best way to start learning about what's good, what's not, etc? What's the best way to learn how to measure what's good and what's not? I can't just search randomly... I need something to search for. Is there a particularly good starting point on the forums for my learning curve?

Thanks a lot fellas and keep the info coming...

i learned the hard way - you can start by searching but the best way to do it is to go to a meet and try all equipment out .

if you cant - the best way is to buy - then sell if you dont like it.

it is just my opinion though.

Read, read, read, read, and read. Then buy and find out for yourself
smily_headphones1.gif
Just stick around for a month and then you can throw out model numbers off the top of your head as easily as your phone number

Read through HeadRoom's site, HeadWize's FAQs, check out the full featured reviews here...not sure what else I can recommend other than that.

At least this is how I did it. If you can go to a meet by all means do so. I still look forward to going to one someday.
