So...are we all in agreement? Or are there any "refuters" out there?

I agree, ASIO sounds the same as KS

*shrug* Bit perfectivity does not EQUAL same end sound quality since we're not talking about opening a Word file. The bits have to be combined with timing info to actually turn into audible music.

Both KS and ASIO passes DTS bit-perfectivity test in my Foobar setup, but they sound noticeably different. I prefer ASIO (Otachan 47a) for its more immediate, detailed presentation compared to KS.

Wow...This opens up the potential for a whole other discussion -- the audio qualitative distinctions between the different versions of the Otachan ASIO plug-in. When I googled Otachan 47a, I was taken to a thread in another forum about this subject. There seem to be some who firmly believe that using this earlier version of the Otachan plug-in with the older version of foobar 2000 (0.8.3) provides audibly better output. This may also imply that KS is technically (if not always audibly) inferior to ASIO and, therefore, no longer in the discussion when seeking the absolutely highest quality output.

I won't argue that ASIO may sound better to you, but it is exactly the same as opening a word file. The timing information is inherent in the digital audio format. Barring jitter I can't see how the data would be different, and I don't see how KS vs. ASIO could affect jitter.

Shesh, there's a lot of asio plug-ins by otachan to choose from here. So Jon L isn't the only guy who thinks that some asio plug-ins are better than others :P. I linked two pages from the same site because they have different plug-ins and info about how to use them, the latter one has the most recent "best" plug-in (2007-12-09 (SSE3): foo_output_asio(dll)_0.51.7). If your cpu doesn't have SSE3 (no clue what that is except some cpu's don't have it) it's ok, there are download links containing SSE2 and normal variations also.

ASIO builds
ASIO builds 2.0

But they aren't available for the new versions of foobar2000, because otachan thought the newer version made it difficult for him.. im not exactly sure why, see here if interested for further explanation:

You can find out if your CPU does SSE3 /SSE2 using CPUZ from here:

CPUID

Cheers.

thanks for that link

ASIO and KS definitely sound different on my rig. ASIO seems stronger and hard-edged with pronounced highs, while KS is flatter. I have no idea why that is.
