I just got my 7506's yesterday and love the sound straight out of the box, can't wait til they burn in a little more. Everyone says that they have a really restricted soundstage-- I actually think they sound fine (maybe I don't mind too much since I don't listen to alot of classical, etc.).

Are there any closed cans out there that have a wide soundstage? or is a narrow soundstage pretty much a given with a closed headphone? I'm wondering if any of the AT series would fit the bill... just curious..

A900s have a super-wide soundstage ability

Also the CD3000s are supposed to be pretty good

The A900 has a wide soundstage, but it's placing and depth is comparatively poor when lined up against the W1000 and CD3000.
It does seal more than the latter two though.

the sony cd1700 is the only truley closed headphone i've heard with a very wide soundstage--some claim even larger then the hd600. i believe the cd3000 is not closed.

I think you have them the other way around. The CD1700 is to my knowledge semi-open. The CD3000 looked at first glance to me to be semi-open. They are actually closed. And the soundstage is larger and better defined on the CD3K.

i'm wearing the cd1700 right now, and have taken them apart many times. they are without a doubt closed. when i tried the cd3k at the seattle meet it was like apples and oranges against the cd1700, the point being they sound different. i have no doubt with a the right source and amp the cd3k can sound really great, but hearing it against my cd1700 on the same meta42/sacd setup at the meet did not make me want to sell my cd1700 and get the cd3000. oh, and the cd1700 had a lot more isolation than the cd3000 at the meet.

the cd3000 being open or closed has been discussed here many times. the consensus is it is an open or "semi-open" headphone, but feel free to do a search, i may be wrong.

Hmmm... Have you looked at the opening around shiny ring all the way around the CD1700 earcup? I've wondered about that. The CD3000 has an odd rubber gasket around the housing, which does god knows what. "Housing-Floating-Mechanism". It is sealed otherwise.

As for how they sound, perceptions and equipment differs of course but having listened to the CD3000 quite intensely over short but frequent periods over the last two weeks, and owned a CD1700 from October last year to last month, and also run the CD3K off the same setup as I had the CD1700 on, I think my opinion is reasonably valid. And I think the CD3000 is a better phone in general terms with one exception for me that I have discovered... long-term comfort. I never felt the CD1700 to have a huge amount of isolation, the same as I feel about the CD3000.

It does tend to reveal more faults in the source, comparatively speaking. Hiss will be an enemy more than the CD1700, but my set-up is completely silent to a volume setting way beyond unlistenably loud on the CD3K.

It's not worth bothering to explain the full details. Let's just say I like A-T's, OK?

Oh and PS: They'll be up for sale soon along with the A1000. Time to downsize once again. I'd hoped to end up with the CD3K, W2002 and W1000 before acquiring my next home phones but comfort issues will probably mean it'll just be the W2002 and the 1000.

from the inside of the cd1700 earcups there are no openings at all. i've had these things completely disassembled (including headband parts) and they are 100% closed.

from what i've read the cd3000 are somewhat picky about source. the cd1700 are less so, but going from a portable amped source to a component source with same amp the cd1700 shows the largest improvement of all the cans i have.

The Sennheiser 280Pros have a pretty wide soundstage compared to the Sony v6.

Etys with the large foamies are acually supposed to have a pretty large soundstage. Besides, with a good set of tubes, it doesn't much matter
