I believe the only full album with barret on it was The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. He was the band leader up until the drugs messed his head up so much. He wrote the majority of the songs on that album, and also played guitar. Also the Jugband Blues on a saucerful of secrets was one he wrote/performed on, as well as Arnold Layne and See Emily Play which can be found on various other Pink Floyd collections (ie Works, Relics).
Barret wasnt around for too many of PInk Floyds music. His mind was getting so bad that he would sometimes forget how to play while on stage. Hence, David Gilmour enters the picture as the backup for when barret would stop playing, and eventually would become a full member of the band when Barret was just too far gone to maintain his membership in the band.
I'm not gonna do the ranking thing, but I would just like to call the attention of you Floydfans to Obscured By Clouds . I believe it came out between Meddle and DSOTM (If I'm wrong, then it was right before Meddle).
'Obscured' is a wonderful, simple album that hearkens back to the pastoral side of Floyd, and there was one, believe it or not. The album is not completely acoustic, but many of the songs have a folky quality to them. And they are in fact just a bunch of short songs, as opposed to being an elaborate manifesto about the suffering of humankind. (I mean no disrespect to Roger or the later albums— I love Meddle, DSOTM, WYWH & Animals— Obscured is just a different kettle of fish). Some very beautiful work: Some slow, some that rocks, and all of it gives you a chance to hear these guys really sing and play, before they created the slicker electronic sound that often swallowed them up as individuals.
