Well, this morning I was a record/use cd show at my local community centre and was very disappointed. It was comprised of mainly bootlegs and old, unwanted (for good reason) CDs - Ivan Morrison - "Sundance" and No - "Close to the Side". It was disasterous.

Anyways, on my way out, I saw a lone table that no one wanted to patronize, so I went to look. Low and behold, a Sony PCDP was sitting there, looking all old and lonely. I turn it around and am presently surprised at a "D-11" staring back at me. The price was cheap, $20CND, so about $4US, and I took it home and tried to get it to work.

I discovered I did not have a 9v DC adapter (anyone know where I can get one of these?), so I took 4AA batteries for a scant 6v and got it working.

First of all, this thing is powerful as all hell. It drives my Beyer DT770s to huge levels. But the sound is BRIGHT and THIN like you wouldn't believe. The line out is much better, but without EQing, the DT770s are far too bright to use.

The headphone out is lovely for my Portapros - I have the volume at 2 to drive them to a perfect volume , and the bass, with the three-level Mega-Bass, actually works: the rest of the frequencies DO NOT SUFFER when this is turned on. The highs are clean and crisp and there is a slight grain associated with the headphone out, but that may just be a dirty volume pot.

The line out, though, is beautiful and lets me drive my DT770s to nice, distortion-free levels from my 7.5v Supermini v5. Nice machine this. Very metallic sound, but when I get my Beyer 250-250s, this should make for a lovely companion to my school day.

Hey Trounce,

I'm not sure if you've got Radio Shacks up there in Canada, but you should be able to find a plethora of 9v's there... Otherwise, I believe Radio Shack sells them off their website..

Good luck.. If you need any specific recs, let me know.

I know the Canadian dollar is not bad - it's about 68cents to the dollars; I was joshin' around!

On a more sombre note, I have discovered that my fantastic buy is not without its problems. And it's a major problem.

The ****ing thing won't read past track 11. On every cd, doesn't matter the condition, it will read track 10 perfectly, and with track 11 it will shudder and sputter and will take several seconds to begin the song, and then it will play fine. But track 12 and up, it just reads it and reads it but will not play. It sounds like it's struggling.

Anyone know what the problem is, or how I can fix it without resorting to paying someone for it?

Thanks.

I don't have a specific answer to your problem, but there are a number of threads by vwap, duncan and others that talk about tracking problems on D-777. You should read those.

Some of the info is about how to adjust pots inside the unit that contrtol the tracking of the unit - the same principles might apply to your D-11.

Also, there is another reference to a web-site that seems to have a lot of info about working on CD players - it appears to be well recommended.

If you can't find the threads, let me know and I will find them for you.
