I have a very used nano, 1st gen 2gb, that tend to just freeze mid song when i use the 'shuffle' feature. I am sure i can go with out using this feature, but its just bothersome. When its frozen I have to let the battery die before it will be come responsive again.

Any known way around this, like a restore trick? Time to get a new one?!?

Have you restored the firmware? If not, then it might be worth a try...
Open iTunes, connect the iPod nano and click the restore button.

If that don't fix it, you might want to look into one pf the later models.
