The only reason for pictures so far would be to laugh - I even used pink and baby blue wire! (can't think of any real project it would be useful in...) I'm going to buy some decent wire tonight and will try to do it properly over the weekend and if that looks good I'll post some pics.

As you can tell from me not having an iron I'm not experienced so it will probably not look great, but if it sounds good I'll be happy

While waiting for my cable to arrive I started to get everything together, only to find that the pins on the drive aren't straight (could have guessed, 2 rows on the cable side but only one on the drive...) so that didn't work. Instead I bought a compact flash to 2.5inch adaptor from ebay with straight, solid pins.

Cable and adaptor arrived yesterday, so I was all set. First try at litz braiding went quite well, as did soldering the jack. Getting the pins on the cable was much harder, and getting the pins back through the plastic spacer very without snapping the cable (Mundorf 99% silver/1% gold, solid core) is very hard. I'm thinking this was a bad choice for headphones as it is far too fragile for stuffing in a pocket, but for a sit at home cable it will be great (have to look on the bright side - it was an expensive mistake!)

Having spent most of the afternoon on it I was all done so plugged it in to test. The result? 1 ear with greatly improved bass but much quieter than the stock cable, and a reasonable earplug in the other (no sound

) I'm off out for the evening now, but will try and fix it tomorrow and give a full opinion but from the one ear it definitely worth it. Can anyone recommend some thin, stranded silver cable, preferably with a UK supplier?

wkwlb: that looks great! What did you use for the connector? Try as I might I can't make the hard drive pins stay in the 'phone they are slightly too small, as suspected

Also it seems that I wired it up all wrong some how, with left and right signal wired to the same phone (this causes the quietness, it seems...) when I buy some stranded cable it will be different colours for left and right! It does sound better though, more bass and better separation, so I shall continue trying to make a practical cable

I know that the FreQ pins are a 20AWG Solid Core size.

I make the connectors completely by hand, literally built from the pins up.

I found a way to use some high purity silver and make it usable for pins - fire hardening (much like iron->steel). Otherwise, the silver is not stable enough for pins. Silver plated copper or brass can be substituted. (best sound with pure silver though).

Attach the pins to the wires, then heatshrink the connection.
From there, I like to use epoxy and heat-shrink to build the connectors.

Using this method ensures the best possible audio and stability.

I can post some pics tonight as I am finishing a cable started yesterday. Unfortunately, the right way to do things means the long way.

Germania do you know if 20awg is the right size for UE? If so I'd love to buy some pins if you have any going spare, as there seems to be nothing out there in the right size. It's that or find some solid copper and attack it with a dremmel and a file till it fits in the hole! That is assuming that tight fitting pins keeps the cable attached, so the rest of the connector would then be purely for looks... how hard can epoxy and heatshrink be to make look worthy of posting pic

I'm off to bed now (it's that time in the UK!) but will check back for pics in the morning.

Using the new cable as we speak - I likes!

Posting pics tonight!

Although, I need to switch back to the silver plated brass or copper pins because one ofthe silver pins just spped at part of the tip - still works fine though.

Definately looks fabulous and sounds that way too.

So Germania, it's 5 days since your first suggestion of pics "tonight", and yet still see none. I'm really interested to see some - please post them, preferably along with what pins you use and how they can be obtained. You are not alone looking for a good cable and I for one hope you can help the rest of us rather than tormenting us with your stories of success.

dude, since you are so eager for picture, I am putting on the pic that wkwlb sent me. wkwlb: if you find this very inappropriate by 'stealing' your copyright, I will remove this pic asap.

anyway, my eyes almost popped out on sight of this, very very nicely hand crafted.

I am still considering whether to jump on the boat for this, I already have an ES2 cable for my tri.fi. but this cable is just making me drooling. According to wkwlb, he can make it compatible with UEs, FreQs or ES2/3 or any IEMs that take 2 pin detachable cables. I don't know how he did it, but very nice, isn't it??

btw, he gave me a link to a mini review of this cable as well.

This is the first FreQ cable I made:

These are the current cables:
NOW WITH GOLD PINS!

This is what the other black cable looks like on my setup.
The white Teflon is more stiff than the black - don't know why - but whatever. I have currently: The original 22awg cryo OFHC copper cable with silver pins and extension cable, 1M black highly stranded 65%silver-34% copper cable with gold pins and gold Neutrik plugs, 1.5M (the one I am using) Black (same as above), and 1.5M White (same as above).

I was pushed into a concrete wall by a person running at the entrance to the train station, so the original cable had a small ding which has been repaired. If someone wants that cable with the extension I will send it at parts cost. I am only 100% sure that these cables work with FreQ, but should be compatible with whatever the FreQ cable fits (Westone?).

Yeah, managed to find gold plated wire to make the pins from - YAY - local craft store!
