I'm soon getting the DT770pro but when I'm away from the computer I'll want holy****bass with my portable player. I've got the original first Sony MD player which doesnt give much bass at all.

Anyone got some players with lots of quality bass that isnt distorted?

TIA

What you probably want is a normal player, and some seriously over EQ'd 'phones...

The Senn PX200 and Sony EX70 spring to mind...

Do any portables actually have the balls to power the DT770s?

After hearing a pair through a CHA47... I don't think so, not unless you listen very quietly?!

I may be wrong though?!?!

I love these threads that actually give me a use for all this stuff I've accumulated. I just did a quick listen with the DT770 Pros hooked up to a variety of portable MDs. The result?
Forget any Sony (at least the one's I have, even the venerable MZ-R50). At full volume, they are barely loud enough to be pleasurable.
The Aiwa AM-F70 was better......the volume control goes to 20, and at 18 they were just about right.
The Sharp MD-MS702 provided the fullest sound......excellent bass from the DT770s. The volume had to be 27 out of 30, though. 27 is comfortable, 28-30 are too loud.
The DR-7 provided almost the same volume levels as the 702, but slightly less. The sound was a bit less bassy with a bit more detail.
Would I recommend any of these combos as a portable setup? Not when portable amps are available......and the DT770s are a tad large.

the best bass reproduction from the headphone out award goes to the sony wm-dd9 titanium walkman--unbelievably deep and controlled bass especially with an all analog recording. the next favorite from my collection is the heapdhone out of the sony d777 pcdp.

for md, the sony mzr70 has some seriously killer bass from such a small unit. actually i think the mzr70 emphasizes the bass a bit (not with megabass), but it is not overpowering or wooly, but taught and deep.

Oh yeah redshifter, I couldn't agree more... My favorite Sony WM-EX80 Walkman (same year as the WM-DD9) and D-777 Discman have the best quality most punchy super quick bass ever! Just solid! TKO YEAH!!!

The best megabass is the old analog megabass. The megabass of the D-66 in the second setting feels like it's going to crush your skull. It only boosts bass and even though it's really strong, it's really tight as well.

I was amazed when I plugged in the DT770 into my portable...
Amazed that I got nothing like a DT770. No 'holy****bass' whatsoever. If you're a basshead and aren't willing to amp your portable, a Sony MDR-V700 with it's 'wholly****bass' is probably better.
Out of the D-EJ2000 it's practically inaudible. Out of the Sharp MD it's a lot better, but there is still none of that DT770 trademark. It just sounds like a brighter D66 (but not as nice). Out of eth Sony D-141 things are a bit better but turn up the volume and the bass starts slipping away. As ger says, lay off the bass boost... It causes distortion.

Hasn't the iPod got some very high power figures? Maybe that's the best portable for it. I don't think any PCDP or MD qualify for the DT770 unless it's really well amped.

Just editing this post, I've tried it and the reason that the poster below has posted powerful bass boost is that he has an HD280. The HD280 doesn't go as deep as the DT770 but it's a lot more efficient so it goes louder. On my D-141 it's certainly a good partner for the HD280. You certainly feel like you're getting good bass. The DT770 goes deeper but is much quieter so holy****bass is not as evident. I think the point here is that unless you're amping, don't use the DT770 on a portable unless you're determined that it's going to be your one and only phone, because you actually get a lesser performance than (in absolute terms) inferior phones.
