Hmm... Just received this from an ebay auction.

Paid a little high - $150 - but since they seemed to be in great cosmetic condition and even had the instruction manual... thought it would be worth it. hehe. Well. (there was another auction of this thing with a little worse cosmetic condition that went for $96... and for me the S&H was like 40 bucks also!)

I received it today, unfortunately, PostNet did a horrible packing job and the case was heavily dented...

I opened it up, cleaned the inside and outside and tried to bend the metal cover a bit, well, now it's ok but still has a few large bumps on the side... oh well.

But! important thing is... well... i have it connected like this:

Audigy => Velleman Control Amp with OPA637 B-grade Opamps => Kenwood Basic M1 Amplifier

First of all, I thought the Velleman control amp with the $50 opamps sounded really good. Well... I was in for a surprise!

OK. first of all, in the instruction manual, the diagram shows that the headphone jack is directly connected to the amplification section. Not with a separate headphone amp section. Thus, a really low background noise for a large amp! I was a little surprised. I don't know what the output impedance is, but what I can say is that with my HD600. the sound becomes MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH more authoritative! WOW.

It's like, I got new glasses and I can see much better. I can actually clearly picture what kind of stage recordings were recorded in. What a wonderful phenomenon.

The bass is amazingly powerful yet impactful and tight, and there is like so much detail that is expressed cleanly it's amazing.

I am still just enjoying the music. Mmmmm... This 80's amp is great. Apparently it cost like $350 back then when it was introduced in the early 1980's. I tried searching for info on these on the web but found almost nothing. But I have to say, these are great, especially for headphones!

I don't have much experience with other headphone amps, but I know this thing as authority and realism.

I am happy.

Now only if I can somehow get my shipping insurance to take care of the shipping damage...
