Amp with the best bass?
Feb 24, 2003 at 5:58 AM Post #17 of 32
Dude, I understand all about system synergy. As a matter of fact, I'm a big believer in it. I just want some interesting reading material about which amps people find have the best "bass synergy" with their systems. I fully understand that experiences can and will vary widely, but that doesn't stop me from being curious about what people like the best.

If you don't feel comfortable talking about bass alone, then that's okay with me. I don't ever buy anything just for bass, and I never will; furthermore, I promise that won't be buying anything based solely on this thread, so please don't stress out.

My vote goes towards the RKV. It made most amps I heard next to it sound like they lacked ballz in the bass.

Hi Dude:
I don't have any problem and I feel comfortable talking about any theme with you man, just that maybe you misunderstood me, or at least that seems, I will ask you in a different way then, why is the bass so important to you, maybe you have any synergy problem or any headphone that needs a lot of bass to perform satisfactorily, according to your profile I didn't find any, all of the headphones that you have listed there, has no problems with the bass extension, so any head amp will take them to a nice satisfactory level in the bass dpt...

zeplin:

I try to ignored you but it was not possible, it seems that you consider him unable to handle his thread, right??? Because my post was only directed to him, do you see his name on top? Well FYI, that means that the person that writes (in this case me) is talking, or answering, or writing, JUST with the other person which name figures on top (in this case him) just that it was in public, as I do not wanted or felt the need of a PM or email, just for that, but it seems that you have to speak in his behalf (or in any other's behalf).....I'm not talking to you so your comment is completelly irrelevant for me, come on man, let people alone, and if he consider my reply to his question inappropriate or misunderstood, HE, AND ONLY HE, HAS THE RIGHT TO CORRECT ME....PLEASE!!!!!as HE DID, ANOTHER THREAD CRAPPING NO, PLEASE!!!! Do not answer me here again, use PM instead, let these people discussing alone....

What do you mean by 'best bass'? The bass that an amp produces should be whatever is on the recording, along with the proper balance and reproduction of the rest of the spectrum. If you notice the bass all the time, the amp is probably colored.

The best bass with the R10

The best bass I have heard was with the custom Angstrom amp...

Oh man, I can't take much more of this. Dude, I know my headphones are good for bass. I have 0 complaints with my system. However, I am always curious about what is better out there, and bass is the first thing I notice when I try out a new piece of equipment. Since that is the case, I figured I would ask what amp has the best bass. It's just out of my own curiosity. I realize (and fully appreciate) the fact that there is more to a good sounding amp than bass. I'm just curious as to what people like the best bass-wize.

So far the RKV seems to be the favorite to some extent. I realize that this doesn't mean that I will necessarily like the RKV or that I will find that the RKV has great bass; it just means that several people like its bass. That's interesting to me, nothing more.

Can't I just be interested without having problems to correct?

Thanks. Sovkiller doesn't seem to get me, but at least you understand what I'm going for.

I don't mean anything. I'm just curious what peopel subjectively like the best in the bass department. If I defined 'the best bass', then I probably wouldn't get as many responses.

I always see people raving about the phenominal bass the rkv puts out. From speculation alone Ive come to the conclusion that it is defenitly one of the top performers in the bass department. Then there is this new custom amp hirsch got which, to him, the bass is better than the rkv with.

Bass is one of the most very important factors in musical reproduction. And is the single most detrimental factor in the difference between headphones and speakers. Its very relevant to be interested people's opinions as to the best bass they have heard. There is nothing wrong with a sonic comparison that has been narrowed down to one general frequency range. No reason to argue about it either..

Best bass is actually a harder question than it first appears. There's a lot more to bass than just quantity. If quantity was all that matter, I could use the loudness contour control on the Fisher 400, turn the bass control all the way up too, and very little could match it

However, IMO quantity is only one aspect. The bass response needs to integrate well into the rest of the frequency spectrum. A lot of the qualities that make "good" bass are not necessarily happening just at the bottom of the frequency spectrum. The "pluck" of a string on a bass guitar has got elements going from way up the spectrum (i.e. the slap of the fingers on the frets), down into low bass (the note itself). Further, there are textures within a bass note that tend to get blurred.

It's difficult for a single driver to produce everything from high treble to low bass simultaneously. It takes a good amp to control a headphone at all frequencies simultaneously, which IMO is necessary for bass that I consider "good". In other words, if the definition is poor, it doesn't really matter to me if there's a lot of low volume going on. The HD-600 is a good test headphone for bass, IMO. If the bass sounds bloated and ill-defined, the amp isn't doing bass right even if there's a lot of it. If the bass is tight and well-integrated, with good definition and detail, the amp has got it right.

Good amps at this: EAR HP4, AudioValve RKV, ebay SET amp are all amps that I'm familiar with and that satisfy my requirements for bass.

I also liked the bass on the Blockhead, Max, and Antness' Gilmore, but the only one that I have enough listening time to state that it has "good" bass to me over a long audition period (2 weeks) is the Max.
