Funny, paying to sit there seething at something... pleasure in pain? I thought these movies were specifically aimed at teenagers. Never gone near 'em personally - even the posters annoy me.
That's why I avoided them. Figured they were just some dumb movies aimed at teens like the Divergent Series, Harry Potter or Maze Runner.
This is one reason I was so surprised with "Hunger Games". Expected to hate it. I only got it because it was only $4 on DVD.
I also don't like the idea of a movie/story where children are forced to hunt each other down and kill one another. I know it's due to a corrupt government etc, but still...
Strangely the 1st movie is not disturbing, but entertaining.
The stories are dumbed down a little, but I still liked them. Better than the usual Hollywood junk (not sure about Mockingjay yet).
Watch the first one and call it a day. If you lived through the 70's you have already seen the post apocalyptic distopia done better .
The true horror of 911 is this paranoid dreck being endlessey spewed out targeted at our youth. Thank heavens for uberhero movies to balance it out.....Oh wait...
The books are definitely aimed at teens, I was very impressed with the movies though. There is a gritty realism of social prejudices palpable in the movies (both writing and cinematography) that was a real pleasant surprise. Highly recommend you give the first one a shot!
I couldn't disagree more. I read all the books in virtually one sitting, and I was completely engrossed by their Orwellian nature. The movies, much like the Twilight adaptations, are a disservice to the franchise. I was disgusted by the first movie, and the teenagey feel to them. They neglected the backstory to some of the major characters. Even the story behind Rue's death felt hollow if you hadn't previously read the books.
I'm hoping they don't mess up the final scenes, or the pivotal points of the story in this last movie.

I thought that The Hunger Games were very Hollywood-ish in both positive and negative sense depending from which side to look at. A lot of pathos, blatant cliches, over the top acting, never ending dystopian theme. But hugely entertaining ( except the Mockingjay). Even Mockingjay part 1 though a failure managed to become a success.
Hunger Games (well, the first two, I don't plan on watching the rest of them) are like a PG-13 Hollywood blockbuster version of Battle Royale. I wouldn't recommend them.
An old Michael Mann film from 1981 and starring James Caan. It even has a soundtrack from Tangerine Dream.
Would have given it a 9.5/10 if it wasn't for the last 15 minutes. Hard to believe I was only ONE when this came out!
Strangely James Caan today doesn't look all that much different these days. I liked him in "ELF" (which is a favorite of mine).
BTW this one reminded me of "Goodfellas". There's not much violence in it until the end when it gets to be almost as bloody as Goodfellas or Taxidriver.
Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 - 6.5/10
I think this movie was probably just too rushed. Some scenes were cringe-worthy. Usually the ones with Julianna Moore and speeches to a large crowd. The propaganda filming scenes were very poorly done.
The first hour was boring and pretty average. You could tell that they just tacked on so much filler material garbage to extend the running time and make two movies out of it.
This one wasn't that entertaining at all. It wasn't terrible, but I'm guessing the book is also the worst of the 3 also.
The whole series now just feels too bloated. I still will probably see Part 2 anyway. Maybe it will actually be entertaining. I hope it's like 3 hours.
BTW I'd rather see this any day over some superhero movie. So sick of those. "Ant-Man" was pretty good at least.
Hopelessly miscast mess that could have been thrown together in Ritchies untalented "Madonna" period.
We have Cavill who obviousley watched a bunch of reruns and figured it would be "cool" to do the whole shoot attempting a Robert Vaughan impersonation. Might work as a lounge act but fails miserably in this film. The Winkelvai makes about as convincing a Russian as Obama and the twitching finger gag loses its charm almost immediately. Add in Alicia Vikander getting the German dialogue completely wrong (along with any semblance of an accent) and you have a recipie for a cast that is not engaging and has zero chemistry together. If Vikander ever works again you can rest assured it will not be due to this film. She brings new meaning to one dimensional characters, perhaps even redefining a new standard as a half dimension. The overall impression of this film for me was that they filmed the rehearsals.
Add to that Ritchies trademark expositional rewinds which, in this film look like they were handled by the second AD and you have the device used to explain things which are already perfectly obvious.
The only saving graces in this stitched together Frankenstein monster of a film are the digital processing to emulate vintage 60's Kodak film stock and the assault scene. The assault is the only thing in here that really says Ritchie, it's slick, incredibly paced and brilliantly shot. If only the rest of the film were done that way.

Thief is an excellent film. Caan at his best in a script that really worked for him. From the same era you may like Ryan O'neil's The Driver. More character driven (pun) but slick little film in it's own way.
I'd recomend Cann in Killer Elite, but it is one of those films I think you had to live through the era to appreciate. Rollerball also. It came so close to being the perfect cynical sci fi film of it's time.
The Divergent Hunger Maze part I suffered more from corporate greed spawned by Jackson et all, who made the new black in film franchises splitting books over multiple films. Works sometimes when you are distilling a thousand pager but no so well for young adult novels.
All of those series films leave me cold for one simple reason. They all are shot like TV films and look completely lost on the big screen.

Gotta check this out. I have Tangerine Dream's OST for Thief (big fan of their soundtracks - Sorcerer, Firestarter, Wavelength, The Park Is Mine - all great stuff) but never saw the film.

I'm going to have to check out Thief. After looking at the stills it reminded me of Prime Cut. An unknown but amazingly great crime-gangster movie that introduced Sissy Spacek.
The frame posted here is how she was introduced in the movie and to the cinema world in general.
