If I had 4k to spend on a portable rig, I think I might seriously consider buying this, a Pico and some top of the line IEMs (or smallish full-sizes, whichever is preferable)

Lmao, there is no way you can justify that cost. If I was going to blow that much money I would much rather get the gold plated 60GB Kenwood.

Oh, to contribute to the topic, throw in some used R10s and that would surely raise the price.

My best portable rig will consist of a Fujitsu P1610 Tablet PC -> Foobar2000 (FLAC files) -> HeadAmp Pico -> UE Triple.Fi 10 Pro.

I'd say the very best portable rig (sound quality wise) would be any tiny full Windows PC like an UMPC. Since you have a $3K budget, You could squeeze an OQO Model 02 + HeadAmp Pico + Whatever IEM's or Headphones you can afford with the leftover $$$.

So this:

As for trying to fit it all in cargo pants. Time to step up to a man bag or cafe bag.

But I'm pretty sure you could fit the OQO Model 02 + Pico system in large cargo pants pockets. I wouldn't do so without any other padding though, easy to break the screen on the OQO.

Maxpedition has some nice packs that you can either wear on your belt, or strap to your leg that can hold all your portable gear. That's if you don't mind the "tactical" look. Certainly more fashionable than a fanny pack.

iriver h140 + 160gb classic (so you can strip the hdd) + best portable dac + XIN SuperMacro-IV + ue11.

source files will be wavpack and the h140 will be rockboxed.

The OQO 02 can only get 6 hours battery life tops. (3 hours with normal battery).

May sound badass but not very practical for portable use with such a crap battery life.

6 hours isn't bad for portable use, and if you need longer, carry extra batteries. How often are you really away from an outlet for more than 6 hrs?

I guess it all depends on the persons life style and how often they will be using it throughout the day.

I recommend replacing the OQO2 with the Raon Everun.

Similar size and weight, but almost twice the battery life. I'm sure I could squeeze 12 hours out mine with the extended battery.

EDIT: Or stick with the standard battery and get the same 6 hours you'd get with the OQO2's extended battery.

Chances are good that if you need to listen critically for more than 6 hrs in a day, you'll have either the ability to change batteries, a place to plug in, or a way to transport a larger external battery pack. 6 hrs for UMPC->pico->cans of choice is a pretty darn good portable solution. Not one I'd make, portably, I'm all about the shuffle and my UM2s, but that's because when I'm portable, I'm not listening critically, I'm out doing stuff.

It has the 600MHz AMD Geode CPU, even surfing the internet will be painfully slow.

It's not at all. It's faster than all pda/smartphones I've been using up till now and that's using a regular desktop browser. Streaming video runs at half fps (youtube, etc), but flash animations run just fine. Other than that it's all good. Divx support is fantastic, decodes 960x544, 2.2mbit video and 5.1 ac3 audio flawlessly.

EDIT: Stage6 works perfectly (full fps).

EDIT2: The Everun is 3cm longer than the OQO though. Same width and thickness.

Now we're on the right track....hard to fit in a pocket, but battery powered and exceptional sound. My vote:

- H140 (with upgraded battery and hard drive...playing flac files)=$320 (assuming $200 used H140)
- MicroDAC (great sound and no farting around with opamps)=$300
- RSA SR-71 = $400
- Sysconcept Optical cable=$20
- High end mini to mini 8" (pick your own)=$100?
- RS-1's or UE-11's depending upon portability preference= $550-1150
- Small camera bag to put it in=$50?

= $2340 max
