just a quick review. a coworker has these and let me listen to them for about 1/2 hour. source = sony d777 - cha47 amp - allman bros "eat a peach"

they're neat looking phones, too bad the sound is uninteresting. lows and highs lacked extension, and the mids sounded thick and over-warm. they are not unpleasent, and have a little isolation. they have a serious veil over the music, despite having a forward sound. also the soundstage was very narrow, and had an overall congested sound.

returning the phones my coworker wanted to know what i thought of them. after a polite reply from me he wanted to know what i really thought.

i told him and mentioned he could get the sony v6 or grado sr60 for less. in any case, when he upgrades he'll probably ask me to help him spend his money.

and another is saved from the dark side of sony.

I take it that you thought of the V500DJ as 'mediocre at best' (aka 'ho-hum'), redshifter.

yes, but for what they cost they are a rip-off royale with cheese.

So, two stars (out of five) for performance, one star (and a big fat one star, at that) for value.

yeah, that's right. just to clarify, i auditioned the v500, not the v500dj, although i'm still skeptical about the sonic advantages of a silver paint job.

Actually, the MDR-V500 and the MDR-V500DJ are one and the same. The headphones themselves are marked MDR-V500, but the box in which the 'phones came boxed in is marked MDR-V500DJ.
