New (and pretty harsh) review of iPod touch from iLounge

I guess I should thank everyone for giving the iPod touch such bad reviews though, the more I think about it-- now I don't have to think I'm missing out on something, haha.

That's SSD. That's different from this.

I don't know folks....I like the Touch! The interface is really nice, and so is the sound, both at the headphone jack and lineout. As far as the video issues, I'll have to check mine later today. Apple indeed needs to address and correct the issue ASAP on the ones that exhibit the problem! Yes, it would have been nice to have a larger capacity but overall I'm pretty pleased with it. Once you experience this interface there is no going back!

im no director of product development or even in marketing, but i think they really messed up with the product line. You got the Iphone for smartphone capability. Shuffle is your no frills K.I.S.S players disguised as an entry level player. You got the nano for school, work, gym. Ipod classic for large home/office music collection now possible in lossless throughout. Load up some video too if you feel bored.

To me, the touch should have been their flagship media player. However, like everyone says, flash memory is too little. I wanna load music, movies, do a little wifi etc etc. That storage is gonna go fast.

It's nice to see that not all fanboys are sucking at the Apple teet.

Good for you, iLounge.

- especially the folks who haven't heard the Touch or seen it in action.

I bought it last week and it's great for travelling. Small, light sounds good with Tomahawk and even without when on airplane.

Movies look great, apart from the issue with blacks - which doesn't affect enjoyment.

Battery life is OK for normal use. Who will watch more than 5 hours of movies a day!!

16Gb is OK - it'll do 100 hours of MP3 (V0) which sounds great in most travelling environments + 3 or 4 movies. Has all of your contacts , bookmarks etc as well

For me it's a great toy. If you don't want it don't buy it - quit whining

no reason apple can't use the same type drive in their audio players.

I don't know what SSD is, it isn't specified on the sony site in the specs :/

SSD = solid state drive. It is basically some flash drives together for higher capacity and seen (interfaced) as a tipical hard-drive.

Well you know what they say about opinions...

Nobody is trying to rain on your parade with your purchase, but I don't see how you can't understand people second guessing a $400 16 gig player-- flash drive or no flash drive. The fact that a lot of them are having quality problems is making it all the more disheartening. There are certainly going to be those that love it, but I'll just sit and wonder when the real deal is going to come out.

Personally, I'm looking forward to getting my iPod Touch because I think thin is great. Having a wifi device I can ssh from and tinker with is going to be great for travelling and commuting.

And the flash vs. hard drive debate is over. The only benefit of the drive is the cost ratio. Reliability, size, power requirements are big downsides. The cost of flash is sinking like a rock, when the cost vs. benefit evens out enough for you, you'll all be using flash. I rip stuff ALAC and transcode down for portable devices, the 16 gig is going to be great for me. I remember changing out tapes in my walkman to change albums, so loading new album sets every few weeks isn't that much of an inconvience.

Too true. Back in my day, carrying around audio cassettes was a pain. You could put one tape in the walkman and carry around a couple more, so you had to commit to listening to what you had.

Each cassette was as big as an iPod, can you imagine that? Also, no easy track skip, album skip or shuffle for us.

Right on the mark with that!. I still have a working Sony Wm6DC pro recording walkman with dolby and metal tape support. It is a beautiful piece of tech back when Sony could still make that kind of stuff.

I'm listening to quadrophenia on it now. Gotta love analog. Sorry for the detour..... Saw a touch today. If I didnt already have the iphone i'd own it in a heartbeat
