Flickr overdid it a touch on the resize sharpening, so go see it at it's max res (1024) if you don't like the haloing.

I'm wondering what you think the effective focal length ends up being. Is is 35mm?

The actual focal length is 35mm; on a APS-C sensor it's like a 52.5mm lens on 35mm.
