Jazz....Where to start?

Maybe, but we have no idea what other types of music the OP likes, since he never mentioned it. So I'll bite back and say that he shouldn't listen to new jazz because 99% percent of it can't hold a candle to jazz pre-1980.

I think that if the OP listens to amazon samples of all of the albums mentioned thus far, and then buys those that seem most appealing to him, he'll have a fine starter collection of excellent jazz.

Actually, I don't agree with the premise. Here in New York, the Mingus Big Band's weekly gig has converted tons of "young people that listen to rock," as have a few jazz clubs with college student-friendly cover charges. And I'm pretty convinced that many of those same people wouldn't have anything to do with contemporary jazz; many think it's too slick or easy-listening or something.

Beginning the journey myself, I'm surprised that nobody mentioned Somethin' Else from Davis/Adderley.... A pure wonder if you ask me...

From a less objective pov, I would recommend Strollin' from Chet Baker and Catherine... Chet is old but insanely good and Catherine's guitar is just superb.
