the mass media room at my college ( bunch of apple towers with mixing stations n' such) has a stockpile of sony MDR-300's, arguable the worst sony headphone, and certainly horrid for mixing ANYTHING. granted i did see ONE v6.

so, what does/did YOUR college use.

I'm not sure of the model, but they were working just as well when I was there as when Mr. Edison gave them to the college . . .

Maybe I'm tone deaf (I doubt since I've been a working musician) but I don't find the mdr-v300 that bad. Granted, I would NEVER use them for mixing but somehow the jumbled mess that comes out of the drivers somehow sits right with me. Maybe it's because when I use headphones that provide more clarity I can hear how horribly over-effected and over-produced a lot of pop and rock music is. When producers and engineers are doing mixdown, I think they purposely mix to compensate for the low quality home, car and portable systems most people have. I imagine most "poplular" music today is mastered to sound good on lower grade audio equipment.

Yeah, that's true, but I'm moving to Suburbia very soon!

True enough about the price. I bought them several years ago and paid way too much. But I bought them from a friend who owns an independent CD store and he just didn't have much headphone stock. I needed a pair and they were good enough at the time. I must say they're pretty durable too. They've been to three different continents and are still holding up. Maybe that's why they have them in a school. College kids are not known to be the most careful or responisble members of the species.

Edit: Xander, I wasn't offended by the Bronx crack. I actually thought it was kind of funny. No need to take it out.

Wow.

Just to put things in perspective, when I was in college we were learning something called Fortran. Code was entered via punch cards. Output was strictly via batch printer on the big green and white striped paper. The original walkman came along around my junior year. I was in grad school at the dawn of the CD.

I think that the evolution of audio in the past 25 years has been just fantastic. Imagine what students will have available 25 years from now...
