I revisited music after a thirty year hiatus, back in 1985, when I heard ABBA sing Super Trooper on my car radio. What a fresh and unique sound. I got a big WOW. I missed the artist and the song. Called the radio station got the DJ, he told me and I went directly to Tower Records. I bought the Singles album.
Hey man, this thing was chockful of stuff I wasn't hearing out of Top 40 at the time when I was like, what, 8 years old? Got me hooked on pop music when my sister's santa sock had this cassette in there. Mine had a Beegees tape in it that I don't even remember the name of. Bright Eyes maybe? Who knows. I still like ABBA to this day!
Edit - oh, it was called "Living Eyes." What a dud.
I remember three albums that got me listening for a lot of time. Voodoo Lounge from Rolling Stones, Dookie from Green Day and Smash from Offspring.
These were the first that caught my attention ...
Bloodsugarsexmagik by the Red Hot Chili Peppers turned a blossoming interest in music into a full-blown obsession. I spent 75% of my teenage income on CDs and, even before I could work, I spent all of my allowance on CDs once I gathered enough.
I guess you could say the album also got me to stop spending my money on candy and Samurai Showdown.
I spent about 30 minutes staring at the screen before I came to the conclusion that the one album that REALLY got me into music was "True Love" by Toots and The Maytals. When I first heard it I was 15 years old, I was staying at my sister's place and I was kinda bored. She had to go to work so I was home alone. I started raiding her CD collection and found that album, I don't know why but it cought my attention. I popped it in her cd player and was swept away by the first song. It literally cought me off guard. "Still is Still Moving to Me" (with Willy Nelson) was the title of that song. I still listen to that album a lot now.
I hereby reccomend everyone here to give this album a try, it's great
I was in middle school and Nirvana's "Nevermind" really turned me on to music. From there I got really into stuff like Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., and the Minutemen. And it went on.
For me? Queen Greatest Hits Part II. First full album on tape when I was a nipper!
First album to REALLY get me in to music after I purchased was Moby - Play, though U2 had quite a few singles I liked. Hold me, thrill me, kiss me, kill me was ace!
Dating myself but it was Led Zepplin Whole Lotta Love on a 45 that got me into music. It took a few more years and working after school before I could afford LPs.
Black Sabbath -- Master of Reality....on 8 track!!! My brother plugged it in and put a set of Realistic (Radio Shack) headphones on me and told me to listen.
I was 4 years old when my mother showed me how to spin up the Beatles White album on a Dual turntable. There was always music and musicians in my home in those days and consequently the love of music is as natural as breathing for me. The first record I ever bought with my own money was Variations by Andrew & Julian Lloyd Webber.
