RS-1? MS Pro? W5000? (Need a compliment/replacement to the HD650)

Well, I'm ready to order either the RS-1 or MS-Pro. Even after reading a few threads dedicated to comparing these two phones, I haven't come to a conclusion as to which I'd like to purchase.

Based on head-fi reviews, it seems I would favor the MS-Pro over the RS-1 but I am also hesitant to purchase the MS-Pro because many users describe these cans as a bit boring (which is what I'm trying to run away from).

Price isn't a concern, just looking for the headphone that I would enjoy the most.

Looking at the bands you listed, I'd go for RS-1. It works very well with rock music. I've went through several headphones to compliment HD650 and RS-1 has been the best headphone to pair with HD650. It gives totally different sound signature. You should check RS-2 also.

That's one thing I'm worried about. Comfort is an absolute must as I keep my headphone on for hours at a time.

At this point, I don't think I'll purchase any of these cans until I can audition them. The hard part is finding a time/place to listen to all these cans.

I haven't heard the W5000, but I do have a HD 650 SD v2 and I really like the RS1s. They are fun and exciting. Also, with the type of music you listed I think you will like th RS1. Right now I'm trying out the EC/SS and it's grand. In regards to the Grado's being comfortable, for me the RS1s are comfortable. I found them more comfortable than the SR225s. I keep them on for 6 - 8 hours at work. Of course, everyone head shape and what their definition of comfort is different. I would definitely recommend you demo some Grado RS1s or GS1000 and if possible W5000 to see what you like. In the end, only your ears will know

Good luck on your search

I've concurrently owned the MS-Pro and the HD650 (with Zu Mobius cable) for over a year. I've also had the RS-1 in the mix for a few weeks, so I've concurrently owned all three at one time.
I now only have the MS-Pro for almost a year now (sold or returned the other two), so that tells you what I prefer.

I did a head-to-head comparison between the MS-Pro and RS-1 for three weeks...

I'm not sure why some say the MS-Pro is "boring" compared to the RS-1. I guess we all hear differently. At least my impressions were not from a brief listen at a meet.

I've also auditioned the W5000 at the 2007 international meet. I thought it had a very hollow sounding midrange. The cups also did not fit my head as others have reported. I would much prefer the HD650.

I just wanted to comment on confort. It is a personal thing, that is differnt for everyone! For me (small head) grados are more comfortable that my 650s. The 650s cut into my jaw and the grados feel good for hours.

You need to try them for yourself before you rule out a headphone for fit alone.

Speaking of comfort; I have the heavier-than-MS-Pro aluminum housing MS2i and the similar-to-HD650; HD600, and I find that after the bowl pads break in or settle in for a few months, the comfort of the two sets of phones are just about equal.

I can wear each set just about as long as I'd like to continue to listen to music!

...must have an Average size noggin!

X2. comfort is better, but I didn't like the sound. I do like the bowls. I've noticed that the bowls were real comfortable for me after a week of break in.

Received the RS-1's today. Right out of the (pizza) box, these sound amazing O.o

Everything is more lively, and I've confirmed that either I'm not a basshead, or the RS-1 has "enough" bass for me. I've only listened to the RS-1's for about 30mins, so I'm not going to compare them to my senns quite yet.
