Ear plugs... what works for concerts???
Jun 9, 2007 at 9:09 PM Post #16 of 27
Some additional information on the E-A-R HiFi plugs - they are $12 a pair, and have a NRR of 12db, which is sufficient for almost all music applications. For hearing health, you are trying to avoid exceeding an 8-hour time-weighted-average of 85db, as well as avoiding any periods of exposure to 115db continuous, or any peaks at or above 140db (like shotgun blasts) even momentarily. This page has more information, and also some good hearing conservation links at the bottom.

Islewind: thanks for the link. Don't know if you read the description at the site....it's the same technical information as the Etymotics ER 20. Actually referred to them as "ER 20" in the text!

I've carried my ER-16s on my keychains since forever. So the new one is 20dB? I may upgrade. The flat freq response compared to foamies is great, but sometimes i want the -38dB of the foamies.

Custom earplugs are less noticeable than something like the ER-20 or foam earplugs because there's nothing sticking out of your ear (if you cut off the pull strings, which most people do). You can order them in clear acrylic, so they're even less noticeable. What's more important, the image of thinking loud stuff is cool, or your hearing?

Even the $12 Etymotic Research ER-20s aren't that noticeable. Here's what they look like in clear:

I've been using Hearos High Fidelity during live concert. Musicians around here also use Hearos High Fidelity for the left ear and a in-ear monitor for right ear. It's like turning the volume down around you without significant loss of balanced frequency.

Cool idea. That way, you can hear both ambient and direct sound. If I ever become a gigging musician (

), I'm going to setup an ambient stereo pair of microphones pointed at the audience and feed them into the IEM mix.

The Hearos High Fidelity is a rebadged Etymotic Research ER-20, so they're both great choices.

Yep, same thing. Hearos's previous top musician's earplugs were awful-sounding in comparison (I own a pair), so it's a good upgrade.

I've heard that most of the item descriptions for both earplugs have the same text.

Etymotic Research sounds more "professional" than Hearos, but oh well.

Bump.

I took my family to see Trans-Siberian Orchestra over the weekend (great show BTW!) and our ears were ringing for the rest of the night. I had no idea the music could get that loud.

Anyway, for next year what are some earplugs to get for the whole family (about ten of us). I know customs would probably be best, but I can't afford to spend that much.
