Buy an unlocked one...swap your sim chip, and be one with it...

You may find that the sync and activation video and the rate plan page (be sure to click through all the tabs) answer many of your questions.

I heard that if you are browsing the web on edge data service (not wifi, make sure wifi is off) or email is being sent or transmitted your phone will not work. It sends all incoming calls straight to voice mail.

Apple stated this was to improve edge service performance.

Is this true?

I'm not sure, if you want we can swap numbers and try things like that out.

My turbodock line out to my pa2v2 doesn't work

Oh and does anyone know where I can get a long dock connector to usb? I'd like to use my dock but the two foot cable is too short for any use. Like 6 feet would be great!

The Time review of the iPhone is fantastic:
http://www.time.com/time/business/ar...639068,00.html
"Steve Jobs has said, repeatedly, that this is the best iPod that Apple has ever made, and it is. It's also the best phone that anybody has ever made.
...
The user interface is crammed with smart little touches — every moment of user interaction has been quietly stage-managed and orchestrated, with such overwhelming attention to detail that when the history of digital interface design is written, whoever managed this project at Apple will be hailed as a Michelangelo, and the iPhone his or her Sistine Chapel.
...
But to look at the iPhone as a laundry list of features and bugs is to miss the point (though if you did, the former would commandingly outweigh the latter).
...
Apple and its partners are just beginning to figure out how to develop for this thing. Look at the iPods of five years ago. That monochrome interface! That klunky moving touchwheel! They look like something a caveman whittled out of a piece of flint using another piece of flint. Now imagine something that's going to make the iPhone look like that. You'll have one in a few years, and it'll be cheaper, too. If you're not ready to think different, then think ahead."

Oh, come on, ed, you're just mad because you camped out overnight for a Zune-to-be-forgotten, and now they're trying to clear them out of K-mart for $50 off....

My wife has an iPhone in hand, and I've had enough time with it to get impressions. Short review: everything good you've heard about it is true.

The list of shortcomings you've heard is also true. Whether lack of Flash, slower typing than on a physical keyboard, etc. are dealbreakers for you, only you can decide.

To the usual pundit list of shortcomings I will add my own personal minor gripes:
- can't use EDGE data network during a phone call (you can web browse while talking on the phone only if you're on WiFi)
- Safari browser doesn't support my accustomed Firefox plugins (it's arguably a tribute to the quality of its browsing experience that I'd even think about how it compares to my desktop experience)

I agree 100% with Wodgy (or rather the review that Wodgy cited) that this is only the beginning. A new Apple franchise with the same potential for longevity and improvement as the iPod.

I also agree 100% that to look at it as a laundry list of features is to miss the point. The integration and ease of use are far beyond what's been seen before. Do not take my word for this but go to Apple's site, watch the videos there (the 25-minute welcome to iPhone video is very much worth the time if you're thinking of one but on the fence) and decide for yourself.

Full disclosure: my wife works at Apple. I used to work there, until Steve...well, it's a long story. I think my opinions of Apple products are not biased in either direction, but YMMV.

Edit: I should add that we paid full retail for this phone. Apple employees will get an iPhone, but not for another month.

Edit: Farhad Manjoo's review on Salon makes some very good points about additional negative aspects.

Thanks, I had seen the "Rate Plan" page, but the "Activation and Sync" video helped a bit. I see how it will transfer my current number to the iPhone, but I don't see how another number gets assigned to my current phone. Will that require a trip to the store? Do you have an opinion as to whether it would be better to buy an iPhone from Apple or from A T and T?

Nice try, but last I checked, I never bought a Zune (won't touch that no FLAC haven, DRM ridden device either, ) I got an iRiver iHP-120 with Rockbox.

Unless, my wife bought me one for my birthday that I don't know about... But she knows better.

The Boston Globe review of this phone is pretty fantastic too:
http://www.boston.com/business/techn...list_can_love/
"After the relentless buildup of the past six months, the temptation to trash Apple Inc.'s new iPhone is pretty much irresistible.
If only I could.
...
The iPhone is exactly as cool as you've heard, and then some. For it's not just cool; this phone is important, in the same way that Apple's first Macintosh computer was important. The Mac showed us a better way to interact with computers, and forced the entire industry to follow its lead.
...
Lots of phones have music players and Web browsers, and there's this clever Korean phone with a video screen on a hinge, which changes into wide-screen mode like one of those Transformer robots you played with as a kid. But these other phones look like high-school science fair gadgets compared to the iPhone, an elegant marvel that even a hype-weary journalist has to love."

It will be interesting to see how much of an impact this new user-interface concept will have on computers. It's what Tablet PC could have been -- and should have been.
