What do you all think about Bootlegs?

Well said Bobes.

When i first started out, downloading shows wasn't an option with my 28.8k modem in 1997, so i turned to finding stores that sold bootlegs, i happened to stumble upon a few and picked up maybe 3-4 cds, three of those sounded great, one sounded like complete ****. Usually, shows taped in Europe are sourced from Satellite or radio broadcasts, these tend to sound great. Lately, digital audience recordings are being spread out and a lot of these sound good to great, many radiohead shows in particular. Again, i can't stress this enough, if you have broadband, make the best of it, get yourself up and running with a newsreader, ya can't go wrong. Or even try direct connect++ or various forums where people are willing to do blanks and postage trades to get you started.

No problems with Bootlegs here.

I've got a collection of around 300 that i've amassed over the past few years. I have some fantastic boots of Steve Earle and DelMcCoury that I could never have gotten from the local record store.

The only problem I do have with Bootlegs is when people start selling them. The level of trust that the artists give us tapers by allowing us to record at their concerts is then broken. I can really understand why people like Alison Krauss get pissed at tapers.

As Gloco pointed out, many of the tapers from Europe tend to get high quality recording from Satellite Radio and suchlike. Here in the UK, the BBC are renowned for the quality of their live recordings and most weekend they broadcast something from their back catalogue.

GLOCO: We must set up some trades sometime.

Chadbang... there of lots of other great recordings of other bands besides the Grateful Dead. I encourage you to check them out.

I wish I could check more out. I do have about a dozen Pink Floyd boots (my favorite is "Live In LA" -- somebody had a nice mic) as maybe a half dozen Steely Dans.

For all you broadband subscribers: The best way to get these bootlegs is to get your ass a news reader, like Agent or Xnews (xnews is free btw). Once you set up xnews, there's quite a few bootleg newsgroups (for example: alt.binaries.music.shn). There's even one newsgroup just for led zeppelin shows

So once you get to these newsgroups what do you do? I always find these bootleg groups and then get confused. Any suggestions.

Once you set up a program like xnews, it has a realtime search engine, just type in: SHN and a few SHN newsgroups will show up. SHN is a lossless format, so the quality is the same as the original master. From there, highlight all the SHN files, txt file and .md5 file and set it to download (right click, select (DE) Queue and hit F4, after a few hours your download will be complete and then just verify the SHN's by clicking on the md5 file. If your using xnews, i can walk you thru it step by step, just aim me: gloco1977

I'm also familiar with Agent. I consider Xnews a much better newsreader though.

EDIT: By the way, here's some SHN newsgroups i visit:

alt.binaries.music.shn
alt.binaries.music.shn.dmb
alt.binaries.music.shn.howie-day
alt.binaries.music.springsteen
alt.binaries.music.shn.repost
alt.binaries.mpeg.video.music (if downloading full video concerts is your thing)
alt.binaries.sounds.lossless
alt.binaries.sounds.led-zeppelin

I'm sure there's many others i'm not aware of, especially under the sounds binaries where there's dozens, if not hundreds, of bands listed. Be prepared to mostly find shows from bands that allow taping or bands that simply are known to have most, if not all, of their shows leaked out as soundboard tapings (ie. Led Zeppelin).

To be honest, you would have better luck asking someone if they would be so kind to burn you a few shows and send them blanks + return postage - called a B&P. They will burn your discs, stick them back in the self-addressed stamped envelope you provide.

I LOVE turning people on to new music and hooking people up with good sounding shows, but I expect people to do their share, as I am doing them a favor. Nothing personal, but you will have better luck with this route.

Some of the tapers/traders can be pretty anal about certain things, so if you really want to go the whole B+P thing right, check out THIS page out. He is talking about Dead bootlegs, but the practice is the same.

Anyways, I would offer to burn you a few shows myself (we aren't too far away from each other), but I don't have much for Radiohead or Roger Waters shows.

Good luck!
