I was watching some award show where Avril Lavigne opened up the broadcast, and it was really tragic. Her off-key singing wasn't enjoyable (like how some punk bands are), but it was a pain-full and uncomfortable experience. Thinking that maybe she was a little drunk or high, I thought nothing of it.

Then on SNL, her live performance was really excruciating.

I've come to think that she's another artist needing studio technology to make them sound good. It only takes 50-100 tries of singing again and again before someone is on-key, and then the studio just layers the singer over and over to make them sound more powerful (ABBA took full advantage of that).

Poor girl, it seems like the record industry has scooped her up as the perfect answer to Britney, and capitalized on all her marketable qualities. She's young, cute, angst ridden, and from the white-trash truck-stop of Napanee ('cred'). I think she would have had potential if they gave her time to mature her voice and music.

I saw her perform on the New Years MTV segment outdoors Times Sq NY with only tank top...............cold, heh heh
Didn't notice any problem with her voice, at least she is more fun than the typical MTV diva like JLO, Brittney, Christina, Shakira etc.

Actually I have a couple Donnas Cds, all female group which play a little edgier music with adult lyrics which are pretty good. Too bad they are now appearing on MTV which will almost certainly mean they will water down their style for the masses.

I saw Avril at a free outdoor concert last year and I noticed much the same thing you did. She seemed a bit off-key and her performance just seemed flat and lacking in emotion. I wouldn't call it "painful" but I have to say it wasn't exactly enjoyable either.

Of course the concert promoters are partly to blame for this too. They put Avril on stage right after Chantal Kreviazuk, and Chantal's one of the best live performers around. Not exactly an easy act to follow to say the least.

I dunno, I think Avril's still too young and has more potential once she matures a bit. Problem is I don't think she'll get that chance with the way record companies promote and do things.

It's all crap. Kelly Osbourne, all that stuff. You no longer need to sing on key or have a voice, you could be a mule in heat, they have machines which will 'correct' all that. Just look bunkable in the photos and you are a star. Not that Kelly qualifies for any of the above, she's merely riding the popularity of the TV 'series'.

If you buy crap they will offer you more crap.

I do agree with beagle that 2 yrs from now Kelly Osbourne's singing career will be over and relegated to VH1 one hit wonders,
coat tails from TV series only........... Beagle you are too cruel, did you and Simon from American Idol know each other, heh heh

At least Avril has a real band and not some karioke figure like other MTV divas

My point exactly. Should have let her duke it out in local Band Warz contests for a few more years.

The studios are filling a demand for this kind of music though. 10 year old kids don't want music that has more than 1 level to it - too much thinking.

I'm sure there's 40 yr old executives sitting around conference rooms at record companies saying " ... studies have shown that quirky spelling in song titles is VERY in right now.", and "Well, we don't want to over-saturate the market right now, so we'll cut her back from the 3rd award show.." and "... make sure she shows more skin next time, our survey shows we lost 2.3% of the male audience."

kelly osbourne is part of a real band, powerpack. she's the lead singer and lyricist, as far as i can tell.

avril doesn't have a band, she has a bunch of highly-qualified studio musicians thrown together so that she sounds halfway decent. hanson got the same treatment all those years ago. avril lavigne is arista's answer to pink. she was dug up and bred for the role of trying to make money because pink is a somewhat similar artist.

i have friends at arista who have confirmed this. she's just as illconceived as britney or j-lo, so quit trying to pretend she's something she isn't.

kelly isn't perfect, and i don't consider her a totally original artist who is driving this decades music scene, i just like her and dig her album. she has stated publicly that she got a record deal because of her father, and she is honest about this. the ******** you talk about is "ooh, i always wanted to be a songwriter, blah blah blah" and just marketing hype. at least kelly is honest about herself and her music career.

grinch,

You really like Kelly Osbourne? I mean, I haven't listened to her music much, but after watching The Osbournes she just seems like a spoiled brat. Her personality is annoying to me, or at least the way they portray her on TV.

And if the album really is decent, please list some of the best songs from it, because now I'm curious.

Can anybody say Pro-Tools?

i'm not really recommending her stuff, i was just saying that i like it. none of my friends really like the album, but i don't think they've heard it anyway. of course, most of them like audioslave..

ick.

i think i like track 2 "come dig me out" and track 9 "too much of you" the most. of course, i'm still not recommending her to most people and i imagine that if you don't like her on the osbournes, you're not going to like her album. i also think she's hot though, so that might help you get an idea of how warped i am.

Not that I have heard much of Avril but as far as Kelly Osborne goes, the old adage holds...If you can't sing...PUNK!
