Now I know what people mean when they say HD600s have harsh treble

You are 15 years old and own the orpheus? You are very lucky!

kelly, I didn't mean the orpheus trend, I meant the let's all get on the hd600 bashing bandwagon, I've seen it a few times here. there is no headphone out there that can bring out so many so quickly to point out the flaws in a headphone as the hd600. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, after all this is a headphone forum, but I just don't see any other headphone that takes so much abuse, I mean if you don't like it, don't use it and move on already. my poor hd600 just can't take it anymore, I think it needs therapy, it's loosing it's self esteem!!!

For such an expensive headphone, I'm sure the high volume of continued sales keep the HD600's esteem up. If not that then surely it can find comfort in the many positive reviews in the press and online.

vrao: Just the Orpheus headphones; that's why I refer to them as HE90s, so they don't get confused.

I'm not rich enough to afford the amp, too, so I'm going to build a Kevin Gilmore solid-state amplifier for them - apparently, his two newest electrostatic amplifier designs sound even better than the Orpheus amplifier. And are a whole lot cheaper, too

I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up sounding better. Make it ugly as possible to further reduce cost, lol. I've found new love for solid state amps, I don't think I'll ever go back to tubes. eric, I'm probably going to have to get the same system if it works out, I better be your first customer.

I'd suggest you buy the HE90s now while you can - the only reasoon I got these is a combination of LOTS of luck, yet more luck, and did I mention luck?

Even still, the right driver has some slight damage/defect (which I suspect my little brother aggrivated; I noticed it after I let him listen to them and saw him 'tapping' the beat on the right driver, since he was listening to Mahler, I tried it myself to see why he was doing that - then heard the "sizzling" pop that accompanied each tap and realized I could hear corona discharge in the right driver, which I couldn't hear when I plugged them into the SRD7 before I let him try them) that makes me not want to run them at the full 600V bias (which I modded the SRD7 to supply), and fixing it can only be done by replacing a driver element...

...and they're $1500 apiece. No I've not been very impressed with the robustness of the HE90s - if you're an electrostatic DIYer, I think the Stax Omega 2s are a much better choice. (zzz has told me stories of accidentally blown transistors and accidentally shorting high voltages... my god, those Omegas must be TOUGH!) Fortunately, my pair works perfectly well at 300V bias, though with a slight loss of dynamic-ness. (dynamicity?)

If you can, shell out the $6k now for a new pair and use your current system until you can get an amp for them. It's much less nerve-wracking. MUCH less nerve-wracking.

I'd bite on the total cost of 3000, but 6k? no friggin way

Is that because of your financial situation or because you think no headphone setup could be worth $6k? If the latter, I find that kind of amusing. Most people will look at you funny if you mention spending $50 on a headphone, let alone $3000.

I think the reason most of us don't own $14,000 headphones is that we don't have the money, not because we believe no headphone is worth that much.
