It seems to me that the foam sheet that covers the driver is pretty thick and could be replaced with a thinner more acoustcally transparent material. Has anyone tried this and where can one find such a material. Basically this material is just functioning as a dust cover for the driver.

Sennheiser put that foam there for a reason. Some people seem to prefer it out, or replaced with tights though.

There are extensive discussions of removing / replacing the foam - it makes a huge improvement.
Just do a search...

You really must try for yourself. In my opinion, defoaming is an improvement.
I apologize if this has already been discussed. I should have figured. Off to the search function...

I don't think it necessary has to be an improvement, to my ears it takes away that warm powerfull sound, that I think is the 650s best area, I think they sound strange when the foam is gone.
I think it is obvious that the thick foam is there to give them the traditional senn sound.

removing the foam makes the highs shrill and muddies/smears the sound. a bad mod in my opinion. replacing it with thinner material, i have yet to try.

I tried this mod for a period of a month or two...but eventually went back. You can't say I didn't give it a chance! Overall it took some of the warmth out of the sound and that's a big reason why I like Senns.

My experience was the same, so I went the other way and replaced the foam with a similar density foam, but about twice as thick. That muffled the treble too much, so I used a penny and cut around it to form a hole in the center.
This mod actually sounds pretty good. While it does recess the midrange a bit, the whole sound signature takes on a more lush character that is great with rock.
