Power Cord Recommendation

Dumb me! I just found out the Opera doesn't come with a power cord! So, obvious question, what's a good cord that will not completely break my wallet? I'm looking to keep it under $120.00 (for now).

Thanks!

Take the one off your kettle. Saving: $120.

It sounds like you're asking for a recommendation for a good aftermarket cord, is that right?

Yes.. a good aftermarket one. But, if a $5 dollar Ratshack will suffice ( I know, an extreme), then that's okay also!

Grab a Volex and be done with it. $5 or $6 bucks a pop.

Duggeh, that avatar still makes me nervous!

Off my kettle? So you think this power difference is a bunch of rubbish?

Many power cord vendors offer a 30- or 60-day return, and the advantage of that is you can try some cords that are recommended by others and decide for yourself whether it makes an audible difference in your system or not -- as opposed to letting others tell you what you must or must not be able to hear. If the $120 cord sounds the same to you as the $5 cord, keep the $5 cord and return the other.

P.S. The power cords that I really like in my system are not within your budget (unless you go used), but I was surprised at the difference I heard from a stock power cord (which may be due to the fact that I have some EMI or dirty power issues at my location, I don't know).

I have both and I would recommend these too.

I hope this thread isn't my fault .

Todd has a pretty basic looking one for $20- he claims its good. Thats probably the route I would go until I got to the point of tweaking. The only reason I have anything other than a standard cord is that it was included with something else I purchased, otherwise a power cord would have been the last thing I went looking for.

Within the system in your signiture, yes.

I wont speculate on the subtleties that may be achieved in tuning the sound of an upper class audio rig by the particularities of various interconnects, speakers cables and power cords. However, they should, imo, be at the bottom end of system configuration and as long as you are using a capable conduction (for any of the jobs) you will be getting most of the performance you can.

How much that most is, depends on your system and your ears, but I think in your system, $120 on a power cord would be a shame. $10 on a power cord if you want a shiny one, and then $110 on used vinyl. That'd bring you a lot more joy. Well, it would me.

I agree. When I had my Apollo->HA5000->W5000 setup I found a certain IC that made a large difference. The last thing I was tweaking was the power cords. I spent a lot of money buying two Black Sand Violet power cords for this system, when to be honest, I couldn't really tell a difference from the stock power cords. Maybe a tiny one, but not worth the cost. The only difference I could hear is that Volex cords in my system made it sound worse than the stock cords. I am sure power cords make a difference in systems, but until you have the most expensive headphone setups or a nice speaker setup, the difference won't be worth the cost IMO. Yes, cables make a difference, but in most cases you have to spend a lot of money to really hear the difference, except when you are comparing silver and copper.

ERS Paper

You can make your own shielding with ERS Paper. Here is a video guide on how to do it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38x9mtCY0-U

A set of 4 sheets is only $70, it's enough to wrap 2 meters of cable: http://www.partsconnexion.com/audiogon_pix/ERS_MAIN.htm

Also replace the connectors with Marinco or something cheap.

I'd recommend the Iron Lung Jelly Fish just as good as some of the big name cords, and only cost $29 for 2
