I'm currently using sennheiser HD 280 pro's with a JMT cha 47. Basically i have grown to like the very controlled nature of these phones for classical music, vocals and house (dance/beat) music. But i've come to the conclusion that they seem to lack the get up and go effect that many hard rock songs demand: something is just missing. What phones should i be looking at for hard rock, assuming i'm keeping my HD 280's. Open or closed will work for me.

drtacoelf,
give the grado125 a chance with your cha47 amp. i have the same combo and it makes everything sound good in rock recordings. the eggos are nice too, but don't have the bass or transient response of the 125's.

But what i really need it a good comparison of

Sr60
Sr80
Sr125
Sr225
Sr325

in terms of build quality, looks, comfort and most imporantly how the will sound with the Cha47 and how well each handles rock.

I guess you could say i'm looking for get up and go, a phone that will sweep me off my feet compared to the laid back style of sennheiser

You have a lot of choices. I have the Grado SR 225. These phones pack a lot of punch, especially for rock. I also have the A 1000. I prefer this phone, even though it does not have the punch of the Grado SR 225, it is more detailed and has a better soundstage. I have not heard the Beyer dt 770, but a lot of people on here think they are good with rock too.

i actually auditioned the lot of those with a cha47 amp and a sony mzr50 md recorder (line out). the sr80 suited my personal taste and the amp/source i happen to use a lot, and the sr125 sounded like an upgraded sr80, so i went for that. all the others sounded fine, but the sr125 had the kind of energy i was looking for. i didn't care for the sr325 at all, it sounded a bit mushy but then again it could have been the source.

I'm listening to a few tunes on 4 phones.. MDR-7506, HD280, A1000, MDR-D66. Coming from an MDS-E10 MD deck, and a Soundcraft Spirit mixer. Better than a CHA47 but fairly representative... Although in this configuration the HD280's do have a fair amount of 'get up and go'.

Listening to P.O.D. "Boom", RATM "Renegades", and some other stuff with 'moxie'.

The A1000's are definitely an improvement... And so they should be for the price. What marks them out I think is the listenability, combined with very definite improvements over the HD280 is virtually all factors.

The 7506 is even brighter than the HD280, and the bass does kick but I didn't find it demonstrably better than the 280 for the stuff I was listening to.

The D66 lacks low bass response (the slap of the bass drums) compared to the HD280. However in other areas it's much mroe upfront and 'high-energy' compared to the HD280. A noticeably wider feel to the sound as well.

Grado is considered the best rock headphone there is and for a good reason. Check it out if you can. I have varies brands of cans Senn 600, Audio Technica W100, AKG 501, Etymotic ER6 and by far I choose my Grado 325 for rock and metal. I used to have the Grado 225 and I really loved it. When I listen to rock or metal I want the punch and impact I expect from the music. The Grado delivers beyond my expectations. It simply rocks.

Looking at your profile you have some good sources and amps selection. What don't you like about the 325? I personally found it to be a small improvement over the 225 but it was worth for me. I did a comparison before I sold the 225 with NAD 522 and Creek OBH11 SE. Sure deferent people have deferent preferences but I totally dig the Grado sound for rock and metal. I do prefer the Audio Technica W100 for Pink Floyd. Actually this is the biggest reason I'm keeping the AT, that and they are really good looking cans
