Hi, I want to buy a pair of Sennheiser 600s, and I will use them with music, movies, and videogames. , But I need help in looking for an amplifier that is portable, and also can be used effectively at home attatched to an AV receiver. I will also be using the amp out of a Sony DEJ-2000. I know absolutely nothing about headphone amps, in fact i had no real idea that such things existed! anyone know of a top quality portable/ stationary amp to use?
Also, what about cable replacements? which would be the best to use? i have heard of several but but never gave any real thought to them. I really want to get the best sound out of the Sennheisers as i can with a really portable amp and upgraded cables! You guys are the best I read here all the time. please note I am an extreme newbie, but a good amp I have heard nothing but good things about is the META42, which was made by a bunch of audiophiles from this site. They are custom built by a handful of people here, and sold anywhere from mid 100's to over 300 bucks depending on what quality of components and jacks, etc you want.

As for cables I wish I knew more, but I hear the following 3 talked about a lot: Cardas, Clou Blue, and Clou Red. www.headphone.com has some good info on stuff like this!

The HD600s... you're buying them for portable use... i'd personally advise against that, with them being so open... you'd never hear any music!

But, obviously if thats what you want to do... you'll have one hell of a cool portable rig

As BenW quite rightly says, in portable land... the META42 seems to be the way to go... if you do order one, just make sure that you specify that it is for the 300ohm Senns - Else, look on the HeadRoom website that BenW posted the link for, at their cheaper amps which IIRC are portable..

Replacement cables? in portable land, you can forget Clou cables... too thick (barely bend at all)... too long,

You can forget Cardas too... also a little too thick... and waaaaay too long, not to mention the fact that it comes with a 1/4" jack plug as standard (I don't know about the other cables...)

The only one I believe you'll get away with for portable is the Equinox, If memory serves me rightly, this has been said to be the thinnest of the aftermarket cables... although still nowhere as thin as the stock cable...

Was it the general praise for the HD600 that put them on your wishlisht Ramrod152001? Would you like any recommendations on perfect portable 'phones, or... are you set with the HD600s in mind?

Well, the 600s arent just for portable use, I just want to be able to use it with my portable CD player if i wanted to. , I was thinking mostly of getting these as a main rig along with an amp that can be used on a portable and on a stationary system effectively with great quality for music, movies, videogames.

I was then thinking of buying some ETYs for specific portable use afterwards, . I dont want an amp that can only be used with the HD600s, I am looking for one that could also be used effectively with the ETYs or any headphone i wish to plug in, as well as being really portable! i hate things that break to easily or an amp larger then my friggin portable CD player! lol
Is the META42 disproportonally larger then a PCDP? Can it be used effectively on a home setup? and can it be used effectively with HD600s as well as any other set of phones? (Like ETYs)
I would love to hear recomendations on portable phones, I was really hoping for universal headphones, but i guess all i can do is narrow it down to 1 for portable and 1 for home. with 1 amp for both uses effectively. Thanks , any help from anyone is very appreciated

Oh and one other thing, is there any equivalent to the HD600s that wouldnt need too much of a specialized amplifier to sound nice? and would these headphones sound nice like the HD600s are reported to sound? I am partially thinking of buying it for all the good reviews i see, thanks

Now that i think if it, I guess I might as well get 1 pair of headphones with 1 amp for home (but can be somewhat less portable/ and can be used with headphones other than HD600s),

And 1 pair of headphones for portable use (like ETYS) along with 1 amp more specialized for portable use, yet can be used with HD600s effectively in case i want to use it with the PCDP. Im making alot of demands!, but i only have so much money and need to concentrate it only in a few things, lol ! i hope its understandable

How big the meta42 will be depends on if you need it to have a wallwart option. Without the wallwart option, it's a bit smaller than a pcdp. You can find pictures of the case it comes in. (It's the translucent type.) With wallwart capability, the size will most likely jump to dimensions in a square smaller than the average pcdp, but with a thickness roughly 1.75 times the thickness of an average pcdp.
