Any other violinists here? Or any musician, for that matter...

I think lots of the guys on these boards play a musical instrument of some sort, though I'm not sure how many make a living from it. I fall in to the category of amateur piano. I did play the cello for a little while though.

EDIT:
Oh, I've been playing piano for about 15 years now, classical of course.

Played trumpet for 5, and cello for just a few months.

Piano for 12 years, percussion for 5 years, violin for 1 year - but I haven't touched any of these since high school. I really want to learn the guitar, but to tell that to my parents might give them a heart attack since they spent so much time and money for me to learn instruments for classical music

I'll wait until I'm living on my own for the guitar

4 years piano... and thats it... stopped playing, I grew tired of it for some reason... I think I prefer listening to music rather than making it...

Been playin' the trumpet for 9 years... really enjoy it, and play with jazz and orchestral groups around town and at church... I hope I won't stop playing because I get too busy or anything, it's really a great way to relax and have some fun.

coolvij, I still think it's awesome that you play the tabla. I've been listening to several tabla CD's recently, including Samir Chatterjee, Pete Lockett, and Zakir Hussein. It's a fascinating style of music. Some Indian musicians can play for hours before even setting the rhythm of a song! I tell ya, if I could afford the drums or the lessons, I'd pick it up myself

.

As for right now, I play middle eastern percussion, and appear to be coming along rather well. I've got two gigs at the moment; one is playing at a local Lebanese restaraunt on Fridays and Saturdays, and the other is playing for a group of belly dancers every now and then. I'm playing at the Oregon Zoo this saturday if any of you Portlanders are interested. The drum I play is called a darbouka (also more widely referred to as the doumbek, and even the tabla in some places), a very high pitched lead drum for belly dancing music. it sounds really cool, and is tons of fun to play. check out www.baladi.com to hear my good friend (and utter superior) Micheal Beach play darbouka with his band in a few really ****ty audio samples.

I've been playing piano for about 13 years now; until the beginning of September I played only classical music; now I've begun to play jazz piano. I taught myself how to play the acoustic guitar and electric bass guitar about 1-2 years ago, and I'm still going strong!

Played trumpet since I was 9 (I'm much older now). Played in jazz bands in high school and college (our college jazz band was honored with a 2 hour clinic with the late Count Basie and his orchestra for winning a jazz festival back in the mid 70s). Played in a nightclub band from the ages of 14 through 24. Also play trombone and flueglehorn.

Violin for 9 months only, it was a parent thing so I never enjoyed it. I still kinda want to continue learning it now but I like the sound of the cello better

B-flat trumpet (solo, wind ensemble, and marching/pep band) for six years and counting...play a wide variety of music...but not much jazz.

*Attempted* to play flute and organ when I was little.

Currently have a fascination for percussion instuments.

Would love to play violin (small, yet powerful) or cello (simply sounds beautiful to my ears).

Added: I can also play a little C-trumpet, F-french horn, and 3-valved, treble-clef baritone.
