I think I have dropped $135 in the last 2 weeks on tubes since I got my Singlepower PPX3 SLAM!

Is there an end in sight?

Damn tube rolling gets addicting BUT it isn't a cheap addiction

It is cheaper with the SP amps than most any other. Price the nos RCA 2a3 / Western Electric 300b / Mullard EL34's / Amperex 6922 etc... You will have a big smile on your face.

No. You have fallen into an endless pit. When I bought my first hybrid preamp 15 years ago, I paid the dealer $50 to buy a "specially selected" low noise Sovtek 6922s from Audio Research. A few years later, I paid over $200 for three pairs of tubes from a well-known tube dealer in Southern California. When the internet started to take off, I started to educate myself about tubes from online articles and audio forums. Now I have over 1,000 tubes of various types: 6DJ8/6922/7308; 12AX7 and variant; 12AU7 and variant; 6BQ5/EL84; 2A3s. And I continue to hunt for tubes at various electronic fleamarkets and electronic surplus stores. The good news is that it's a better investment than most of my stocks!

(that's what I tell my wife, even though I have not sold any of them)

I bought more than 35 tubes in last month alone. Good thing is that my wife does not check credit card bill.

I just tried a pair of gold pin JJ ECC83S in place of the Shunguang<sp> 12AX7s in my Dared MP5. They only stayed in for about 2 hours before i had to put the originals back in, The sound got too mellow and laid back. Very full and rich, but not nearly as lively or spacious as the original chinese tubes. I think I'll leave it alone for a while since the sound synergises very well with my MS-Pros.

With 4 tube amps I have spent a small fortune just in the last two months. With SP amps being so versatile with the adaptors I see no end sight either. The Air Tight is new so the all the tubes are stock but I am already on the hunt. An endless pit indeed as gundam91 says.

Unless you you're using 'premium' 6SN7's TS RP,Syl metalbase which are pushing $400 a pair now.

Sure, the ones in the "throw away" box.

They measured below the required minimum on the TV-7D/U tube tester.

This thread is funny.

Does buying a tube amp always cause a person to suddenly become obsessed with collecting as many tubes as possible?

I bought a Woo6 about 2-3 weeks ago and now find myself constantly scouring ebay and on-line tube shops for more tubes. The amp was just over $600, including 4 tubes (1 Chinese 5AR4, 1 Svetlana 5U4G ST and 2 GE 6DE7 driver tubes). Since buying the amp, I've spent almost half the cost of the amp again on tubes. Over the course of the last two weeks I've amassed a total of:

- 6 5U4G coke bottles (GE, Raytheon (x2), Svetlana, RCA, Stromberg-Carlson)
- One RCA 5U4GB
- 3 5AR4/GZ34 (Japanese, marked GE, Philips Miniwatt, Chinese)
- 5 Pairs of 6DE7s (RCA, Amperex, Dumont, GE (x3))

I know it's not a lot, but I need to be stopped. Now.

I've spent about $100 or less on tubes for my WA3. I bought the recommended Tung-Sol and Amperex and was done. I see no need to keep piling up tubes, just not exciting for me I guess.
