Hi everyone. I just won an auction on ebay for a pair of these AKG K-401s for $106.00 USD.

I am wondering if these are good headphones, from your personal experiences?

I currently use SONY MDR-CD380s, and I hope this will be a good upgrade.

I will use them mostly for producing (and occasionally DJing) electronic music. Mostly trance, progressive, tribal house, breaks.. stuff with alot of bass and expressive highs.

Think this is a good purchase?

i'll be looking to your review and opinion after you use them for that purpose. if the k401 are anything like the k501, you may find the k401 lacking in high end energy. of course if you mix with them on, you may exaggerate the treble to compensate, so the people may like it. and of course, the bass shy k401 may also enhance the the bass at the dance floor, as you will probably be turning up the bass on the headphone to compensate. hey, who knows for sure?

why not do a k401 vs mdr380 review in two weeks?

chrono: I guess, you will have to be careful with not adding too much bass into your mixes, as the K401 like the K501 drops rather quickly in bass level. The upper mids and highs are even a little more prominent than on the K501, which has a slightly wider soundstage. My friend David uses a K401 for mixing his trance and techno stuff, which turns out to sound fairly good - and he says the K401 were a very good upgrade to his old Sondy MDR-V3. So I'd be fairly positive that you'll be happy with the K401, too...

Greetings from Munich!

P.S.: A good laugh by the way: AKG has a congratulations advert in the recent 25 years jubilee edition of the german "audio" magazine - and they mixed up the release dates for the K501/K500 and the K1000. So much for pr people...

P.P.S.: I've found an unexspected female X-mas angel near Stuttgart - so sorry for my good mood!

True, It'll be interesting to see how the final mixes turn out with these new headphones.

Right now mastering with the 380s (which are not very effective for lower-end frequencies) give my mixes a very bass heavy feel, which people tend to like in this style of music. But unfortunately when the bass sounds fine on the 380s, it tends to turn out alittle too muddy when listening on regular speakers, which can ruin the mix.

I'll do a comparisson review of both, when the K401s arrive in a few weeks!
