Gameboy Advance: Afterburner mod

Wow.... pretty sweet... perhaps my unbacklit GBA is gonna have to go on ebay...

anyways, for those of you still interested, i use a headlamp to light my current GBA screen. y'know, one of those flashlights that attaches to your head via an elastic strap... like coal-miners wear. they can be found at most camping/outdoors places and besides being really useful for GBA lighting, are useful for a multitude of other things.

BTW, check out Advance Wars for GBA if you have not already. I bought it about a year and a half ago, and I find myself still addicted like crack.

Wow a headlight? Now thats gotta look even more goofy than HD280's!

I just use a wormlight and it works great. I just bent and twisted the thing until the lighting works perfectly with the glare (reflection of the light itself) on a non play area. I think a lithium-ion propietary battery is going to be possible price gouging...but good thing lithium-ion batteries are at least good in recharge I think.

I like Advanced Wars also and consider it my killer app for the game system. I also like Konami Arcade Classics cause of the perfect renditions of classic frogger and other games and you can do the classic nintendo start code for better graphics. On the otherhand, I'm willing to ditch my Golden Sun and Super Dodgeball.

I'm going to have to see the backlighting in person before I buy any new version...the size or ergonomic differences do not interest me and I like how well the classic versions run off just Nimh AA's. Perhaps I've just become accustomed to the wormlight but I can probably play fine even in the darkest dark. And unfortunately that picture surely doesn't show the difference, the metroid fusion picture looks good but looks like a glamour shot.

... i believe i've been seen in public wearing the hd280s plugged into my GBA with my headlamp blaring.

I have a wormlight also, but I find it does not do the trick for me. The lighting is just a little too... flat. I prefer incandescent bulbs (or a little more 'flooding' of light, if it is that flourescent-type). Those late-night advance war sessions can sometimes turn into hours and hours, and my eyes thank me for my headlamp usage. actually, they still hurt like a mofo, but it's better than the wormy.

topless headlamp bar?

I just installed an afterburner - it went well, except for one dust particle on the anti-reflective screen. Luckily they sell replacement AR layers so I can rework it.

What amazed me was that they could sell this product for installation by just anyone. I've built a lot of stuff like this and it was still a 6/10 difficulty - I bet there have been a lot of broken gameboys when people not really up to the task have tried to install one.

I was going to buy the new GBA SP but now I'm not so sure. The old GBA has a better width and will be more stable in play - imagine how much the screen on the new one is going to swing around when you're pressing buttons. The old one stays in the same place because your hand are either side. The afterburner looks as good as the new model, the only disadvantage being the shorter non-rechargable battery life. Having to carry a separate adapter for headphones doesn't sound good.

What makes you so certain that the AfterBurner mod and the GBA SP look similar? I hope they do since I've heard good things about the AfterBurner but I've not yet heard either way.

On IGN they said the lighting was slightly better on the SP as opposed to a regular GBA with afterburner. They said it has a blue tint like the Afterburner, but it is even less noticeable.

Also, the screen has a default angle. It really shouldn't swivel around while engaging in overly-enthusiastic button-mashing.

Yes, I was thinking of the IGN comparison too. I'm really happy with the afterburner, can't imagine it getting much better (except for that one tiny hair...).

What I meant about the screen moving is that any rotational movement you make while holding a gameboy will result in a greater movement of the screen on the SP model because the GBA has the screen right in the middle of the likely axis while the SP has it further away. All a guess since I haven't played with one but I remember the old "Game and Watch" clamshell screens would move around a bit during play. On a plane, train or in a car it might be a problem. I didn't mean that the hinge would move.
