Hi all, I just received my AKG K701 headphones and have them plugged into a Harman Kardon CDR-26. The output jack is rated at 1v @ 32 Ohms. How does this translate to mW's? I just ordered a Val E10 amp rated at 300mW into 100 Ohms. Will this amp reach louder SPL's and have more dynamics than my H/K? Thanks.

Given the 701 has a 62 ohm impedence .... you need specs for that impedence. You cant really predict what an amp will do at different impedences. If the VAL amp is tubed and OTL then the power output will likely drop at 62 ohms, possibly signifigantly. The rated power of the HK doesnt matter at this point. You have the pairing .... does it sound good and get loud enough for you? As for dynamics, how an amp handles dynamics is not always tied to power output. Again, you will have to actually hear the amp to make that determination.

You want your amp impedance to be lower than your speaker or headphone impedance - not the reverse - and you have a lower amp impedance at 32 ohms than your K701 at 62 ohms.

one volt at 32 ohms is plenty of power at 62 ohms for headphones. Don't remember the exact formula for converting to milliawatts output. 100 milliwatts at 62 ohms would drive the K701 to a very (too) loud volume.
