Hi its my first post, but long time reader
biggrin.gif
. I recently purchased the a900, and I know that many people upgrade the pads to the a1000 pads, but i read in this post

(http://www.head-fi.org/forums/showth...ght=a900+w5000) that the w5000 leather pads also fit the a900. I havent found any other threads that confirmed this.

My question is if anyone has tried the a900/w5000pad and if this changes the sound in any way.

Thanks!

Yes, they are.

It's kinda hard getting hold of anything remotely non-mainstream here

I believe audiocubes.com ships the w5000 pads to Australia. Bluetin.com also ships to australia, but im not sure if they have the w5000 pads.

I would say probably yes going by Elephas post here.

He used W5000 pads on an A950LTD, and since the A950LTD/A900LTD use A1000 pads which are said to work on the A900, the W5000 pads should work on them as well; obviously I haven't tried it directly and am only inferring by indirect comparisons.

I've installed the W5000 pads on the A950LTD. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the plastic part on the A950LTD where the pad wraps around should be the same as the A900 and A900LTD.

The W5000 pads are slightly thinner than the A950LTD pads, and the distance from the drivers to the ears are reduced. The difference is not very great, but there seems to be one nonetheless. I think this makes the A950LTD a bit more forward-sounding and more full-bodied.

It is similar to pressing the driver housings against your head with your hands. I don't think this is necessarily desirable, since the A950LTD's vocals are already forward-sounding. Pulling the driver housings away from the head too far results in an unacceptably thin sound to me. Comfort is improved with the W5000 pads. The leather seems to breathe more than the pleather and it feels better.

Here are some photos of the A950LTD with a W5000 pad installed on the left side for comparison purposes. The opening on the A950LTD pad is oval-shaped while the W5000 pad is round. I don't think this affects the sound.
