I love the music but there is something strange about it. The songs are fairly minimal and ambient, but the CDs tend to lull me into submission, then play a track that makes me think horrifying thoughts, then play soothing music. The CDs have similar effects on my friends. Does anyone else have such an experience? How does BoC make not-scary sounding music that produces scary thoughts?

a lot of BoC's tracks have dark undertones, it was so with Music has the Rights... and also with Geogaddi. there's something very wrong and spooky swimming around under the murky waters of each of the "darker" tracks. however saying that, Rugbiv or Amo Bishop Roden are just about the happiest songs I have heard, the latter bringing me close to tears once.

i just recently got the boc double lp of "music has". while the lp art is fairly creepy (no faces!!!), the music to me anyway is pretty funny. "orrrrrrrrraaaaange!"

This thread reads very differently when you think BOC means Blue Oyster Cult instead of Boards of Canada.

On a more serious note, I used to listen to Fire of Unknown Origin and it used to kinda weird me out also!! I bought it solely for the song from the Heavy Metal soundtrack, Veteran of the Psychic Wars, and after listening to the rest of the album I always felt weird. I never paid much attention to it, but now that I think of it I almost never listened to the rest of the album, I just would play that one track a few times and then swap discs. Maybe Jon's on to something here????

hahaha! Never thought of that...
Boards' lyrics are fairly benign but man they can screw you up if you listen to them too late at night.

Music has the Right to Children is one of the best records of the past 10 years or so, imo.

Kind of reminds me of watching children's television with a ghost looking over my shoulder.

If you like the sounds of BoCan, try Bola as well.

The closest I can compare BoC is Aphex Twin, with a different type of meance. It is mellow enough to just chill out with and it is deep enough that you can listen each time and hear something new.
