Hearing The Unexpected In Recordings

I'm a big fan of glenn gould, and on his 81 recording of the goldbergs, I can hear a symphony of some sort playing in the background on track 16 around 1:21ish that continues all the way to the end of the track.

jim,
now that you alerted me to it, I hear it as well. But on my redbook CD it is present throughout track 16. It starts at 0:00 with something that sounds like pop or jazz: a drum set or a rhythm section (but only the treble part of it). This seems to alternate with sounds of the orchestra later on. Really strange. I guess markl might be right: they re-recorded on their master tape. BTW, all this listening to the unexpected is non-musical, unimportant and strictly audiophile non-sense and we ought to be ashamed of ourselves.

markl,
this documentary is called "Thirty-Two Short Films About Glenn Gould". Francois Girard directed it in 1993 and it stars Colm Feore as Glenn Gould. The film really succeeds in capturing Gould's spirit and personality. A very beautiful film. Almost as highly recommended as Gould's 81 recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations, that the film's title and structure allude to.

Tomcat, you're right! I hear it too now. I just listened to it at a loud volume and I can definitely hear it through the whole track. I guess the little bits at 1:21 and 2:30 must have been dramatic crescendos in the orchestral piece, because it seems to really stand out against Gould's piano playing.

I've seen that video too, and I liked it too. It really gives you a nice glimpse of his life in all it's oddities...like the (rather humorous) chain of prescription drugs that would eventually cancel themselves out.
